Grizzly hunting?

Post by beaglewalkerhunter4 »

Does anybody hunt grizzlies with their hounds? or even think that it can be done? I hear alot of folks say they dont because they would end up with alot of dead dogs. Im in the middle of meet mr. Grizzly and he seemed to have a limited amount of success even without tracking collars 4x4s ect. But it seems that with the right hounds and some expirence it could be done with some success. what are some of yours guys thoughts on this?

It is being done in Sweden, and Steve Mohr caught a griz this year, on purpose, and made it climb.

A guy in Idaho had a griz race, got himself hurt a little and some of the dogs if not all won't run bears anymore. They weren't plotts  The above mentioned dogs are.

My buddies and I have been doing a bit of this the last few years.
Killed one on the ground this year and one last year as well.Well not me but the gang did.
Grizzlies are very difficult to tree,I have never seen it first hand but have seen a few photos of a long claw or two looking down from above, pretty cool.
Typically these races end up covering alot of ground and if you can't finish it on the ground in short order you will be in tough country quick!
I don't really see that these bruins are any harder on dogs than a tough black bear would be in so far as being"dangerous",they will however test their staying power.
It's a game of miles and bayups, cliffs and hunting ability, yours and your dogs.

BWH-4 What you need to do is Google up KARELIAN Hounds Several are being used in BC Some are also being used in Montana.More so as protection as opposed to hunting.

These dogs are not hounds. They do not scent trail. They are led to a bear and bark on a leash as park rangers or game wardens pelt the bear with rubber bullets, to create an "unfriendly environment" that will discourage a bear from repeating bad behavior. they are a joke, nothing more than barking from a leash. I did see where they treed one blackie after being led to within about 40 yards of it. The title bear dog apparently comes from their dislike for bears and a need to bark at them  These dogs misrepresent a "real" bear dog and do alot less than a good pack of bear dogs would. Marketing and BS made these dogs high dollar. My ins. agent insures these dogs in MT, to the tune of $85,000 for one, the breeders must be laughing all the way to the bank. I am personally disgusted by them.

THE LOCAL CO'S USE THEM HERE WITH SOME SUCCESS ALBEIT TO A LIMITED DEGREE.
GENERALLY SPEAKING THEY ARE USED AS A DETERANT TO TROUBLE BEARS IN TOWN AND ALONG WITH THE RUBBER BULLETS DO GET THE JOB DONE SOMETIMES.THEY HAVE ALSO BEEN USED TO TRACK BEARS AND COUGARS IN HOT TRACK SITUATIONS BUT ARE NOT GENERALLY VERY COLD NOSED NOR ARE THEY TERRIBLY TENACIOUS IN A REAL BEAR FIGHT.
THEY ARE DEFINATELY NOT HOUNDS AND COULD NEARLY BE REPLACED BY ANY LARGE BREED DOG WITH A LITTLE ATTITUDE.

Yes, here in Sweden the plotthounds had done very well when it comes to bearhunting on the swedish brownbear/grizzly. Impressive dogs!

Larry , just for the record . It was the young dogs that did not want to have anything to do with bear afterward but they have since came around . I do not know what they will do on a bear that is going to stand with them though. I have hunted with 2 of the dogs that were on that grizz sow and cubs and both dogs are doing well the one a plott the other a bluetick .

I talked to a guy in BC that has some pretty good bear dogs that make nasty black bears climb and he has put his dogs on a grizzlie. He said that the race was about a 15 minute one. That is how long it took for the grizzlie to knock the guys pack in half. These also were not young and dumb hounds they were seasoned veterans. A bad grizzlie is bad news. They are at the top of the food chain and nothing scares them. They do what they want and this one sure didn't like being bothered.

Gotcha, I was told one walker flat quit hunting bears after? I guess you can't really say that they have come around til they get on a bear that stands with them though?

Um, I'm not smoking anything....., those that would own or brag on those karelian dogs sure might be into the pipe. Those 4 blueticks still aren't gonna make a griz climb, good luck though. Course griz and books are pretty few and far between in Ky, so I think yer safe.

I have caught and killed a few Grizzlies on the ground. As a matter of fact I offer a Grizzly hound hunt for Spring 2010. You can bring your own dogs to hunt along side mine. Check out my Website http://www.sheepcreek.com and you will see the pictures

My point is, don't get caught smuggling books into Ky. They take that offense pretty seriously there. Will lock you up and throw away the key.
