Rigging w/ young hound
HELLO
THINGS ARE GREAT HERE PETE GLAD TO HEAR YOU ARE GIVEN THEM BEARS HECK. I,VE BEEN RUNNING MY RABBIT DOGS HERE FROM HOME A LITTLE AND COON HUNTEN JUST ABOUT EVER NIGHT... PETE THE POINT I WAS TRYING TO MAKE ABOVE ABOUT A DOG BEING BROKE WAS , YEARS AGO SEEMED LIKE A GUY HAD TO BREAK HIS DOGS OFF EVER THING LEASE WISE IN OREGON, NOW DAYS SOME OF THESE GUYS REALLY THINK THEY ARE BORN BROKE WHICH I FIND IT UNBLIEVEABLE. SOME WONT RUN SOME THINGS THATS RIGHT AS YOU WELL KNOW, BUT I STILL SAY IT;S THE SAME OLD GAME IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN, SET UM UP UNDER THE RIGHT CONDISTIONS WITH THE RIGHT DOG AND IF THEY AINT BROKE THEY ARE GOING TO RUN .. IT ALL STARTS GOOD BUY A GOOD HUNTER WITH A GOOD DOG TO START THEM WITH AND LET UM SEE SOME GAME.. AND AS FAR AS A DOG CRAPEN IN OR ON THE BOX IF IT WAS A GOOD UN AND HAD TO GO IT COULD USE MY POCKET...L.O.L. YOUR FRIEND IN SPORT.....TOM

u wont get any
from me on that tom-
push those pups -make them cold trail -start their own tracks- -you are gonna have some accidents-run some trash-
always run em with a broke dog , put em on fresh tracks- -they may never run trash-- may never be lead dogs -i try to do a little of both- i want them to know what we are hunting -- walk them into a few trees - once they have some clue what we are after -then try and set em up to win -- really cuts down chances of running trash -i have had lots of pups that never trashed-but they sure werent born that way-- i had a good dog to start them with - and handled them very carefully-and was lucky too-
i have had some of worlds trashiest-- and thats because at the time--had nothing to start them with -- started all over from 0 -- i dont want to
try that again--
- i will put a young pup out on old tracks with a broke dog bout any chance i get - even better is 1 pup with several broke dogs --he isnt going to trash alot-- new guys starting out with nothing to train with -- need to know whats real and whats wishful thinking - it isnt easy to make a pack of dogs starting with just pups -
i cant train a dog to do anything-- cant make him run-- or want to--
i can probably make a dog out of that crazy wild gamy beast -- that will run anything with a heart beat -- gonna take a little training and discipline -
i cant do a thing with a dog thats too stuck up to run trash lol
tom says "SET UM UP UNDER THE RIGHT CONDISTIONS"
there ya go - thats all there is to it
when the tailgate drops
Now that everything has been cleared up I can say I have never had a hound run trash more than twice either. After the second time it is called bumping trash.
I have never had a trashier than heck young dog turn out to be great either. I have had trashy young dogs mature into good dogs, but never great. Most of the trashy dogs I have owned were lacking nose.
I see a little exageration both ways in this thread.

Looks like you've already had lots of good advice Mike on how to handle the problem. I use a shock collar to shut mine up if they get too fired up in anticipation of running or begin to babble, but mine are use to that method. Have you used the shock collars on this young dog before? If not, I'd make sure to use it for other handling corrections before I started shocking one on the box.
I always give them a progressive warning starting with "shut up" followed by their name, second warning a "shut the Hell up" followed by a beeper on their collar, then the third warning both those again with whatever shock level it takes to gain compliance. My thoughts are if that dog knows the shock is coming after the warning and beeper then it should be smart enough to understand and avoid the shock by giving compliance..............
It also helps to have a box of finished dogs around it to check why he is barking. I have a couple hounds that won't rig anything but a fresh bear track, while some of the others may bark where a lion crossed and scratched a couple days back. You do have to take some good with some bad if you're gonna rig old tracks.....be careful those dogs aren't getting punish for riggin that stuff or they may be smart enough to quit.
I had a buddy go bear hunting with one of the big hound trainers of our time who had along one of his "best ever" rig dogs--a living, breathing legend. My buddy claimed that old hound rigged on an ant pile with bear crap near it that was too old to start the track. He claimed the handler got mad and whipped his dog's butt because he was riggin stuff he couldn't run. If I did that my hands would be sore or those hounds would have quit me years ago, so decide what you want out of the deal and work toward that means.
Good luck,
ike

FIVE YEARS............. BOY THATS A LONG TIME AINT IT.... HA PETE CAN YOU BELIEVE SOMEONE WOULD DO SOMETHING AS SILLY AS RUN AFTER A BUNCH OF DOGS FOR FIVE YEARS..........TOM
One of the first lessons I learned in hounding is that every hound guy I met had the best dogs, had been hunting longer than anyone else, was a pioneer in the dog training field, hunted in the roughest country in the world, and got more game than any other man that ever dropped a dog on the ground.
My neighbor had hounds over 50 years ago and he said it was basically the same back then. So not much has changed, just that the internet has given us a bigger forum to tell everyone about our greatness.
Kevin summed it up better than anyone I've ever heard when he said, "I'm the second best houndsmen in the state. Who's the first? Every other hound guy I've ever met."
It's probably the same in about every arena in life, hounding, drilling, fishing, business, whatever.
The blowhards and know-it-alls and living legends are everywhere, not just in hounds. My buddy hangs out on some rock 'n roll forum and there are guys on there who are no different. Been there, done that, know everything and are better than anyone else and been doing it longer than any other man alive.
I read some of that stuff he sends me and it's all the same as you get on any forum. Pretty easy to spot. Just throw out any subject and pretty quick they'll make it about them, their ability, their dogs, etc....
And you can trust me on this one. I've been running down trophy animals with my dogs since Adam and Eve left the garden, invented dry ground hunting in the west, rigged dogs off a damn covered wagon, and my line of dogs can trail scent that hasn't even been laid yet, that's how good their noses are.
You're all just fortunate you have this forum so I can share my greatness with you. Imagine how hollow your lives would be without me in it.

I know what you mean dawg, when I first started riggin hounds it was off a hand cart cause the Spanish hadn't brought those horses over the water yet...........roflmao!
I often think of that old roughneck and how he knew it all when I get on this Internet and witness the vast wealth of knowledge everybody has gained. I use to think I visited these sites to share photos and stories but you have shown me it's more for the never ending knowledge one can gain on his daily trip into cyber space.........
Keep'em treed,
the ikester
P.S. If any of you guys are experts in roofing a 2200 foot house and installing insulation come on by today and I'll put you to work.
