Depends.....I know of a few cats in my area that would make you wonder if you're running a coyote until you see it cross the road.
With so many variables in trailing game it's difficult to answer.

on average a jumped race lasts about 20 minutes with dogs that are in shape.

Run a cat this morning that was half coyote I think.
Hunting in big country in western kansas.
Sent dogs in river bottom, no water but cat tails & high weeds & high grass.
They jumped cat in 5 minutes.
He tryed to pull some funny stuff there in the cat tails & then reversed
We tryed to get back to the road before he crossed, but we were late.
He then wen t to a little town, only 50 people about 1 mile away & run there for a while.
He didn,t like that so he got out of there &run out in a fence row in open country
short grass range land.
He made it to a milo field about a mile away from the town, These fields are a mile long
big fields there of corn & milo. They run him in the milo, around & around from one end to the other for a while, then he decided he would get in a corn field, this is all un harvested crop. He run there for a while then run in to a nother corn field for a while, All the time it is a fast pace, like a coyote race, we checked tracks at every road crossing, it was very muddy & we seen cat tracks at every crossing, so we knew we were on the right game we even seen the cat twice. His track was not huge, but a little bigger than average.
he kept this up for 3 hours,
we had 8 broke dogs & one pup after him.
Not a tree for miles, so he could not tree, but he just stayed in the corn at last, It was dry land corn so not very thick & leaves has fallen & easy running for the dogs, but they could not capture him.
Finally my older dogs began to weaken & the young dogs had run their pads off & we finally loaded them & got out run again. I had had 3 hard cat races the day before in the rocks & their feet could not take 2 days. This was probaly the toughest cat I have ever run. So this is how they can run sometimes,

Re: Average Bobcat Race?
Hey Hipshooter, that sounds about average for me! Every part of the country is differant , aint it! Takes differant kinds of dogs in differant locales, and the methods of running them sure vary. If running is good ,and my dogs are fair , I figure we will either catch or lose him, in 1 hour after the jump. Not saying anything against the ability of anyones hounds any where, but Kansas has some damn poor running conditions for cat huntin. I have seen dogs ,that were real good start to finish, in other states, differant conditions, couldnt do anything here. I dont know why I do it! I spose I always will! Kirk

Kirk,
Where do u live?
I know a lot of people don,t agree with me,
but I have run cats in the south & I think the northern states on dry land
the cats are a little stronger than in the south.
I don,t see any one up here catching any.
A cold nose dog in the south is a hot nosed dog in the north.
Dogs raised here do much better than shipped in dogs.
Dogs raised in NM or west tex do good here.

Hipshooter,
Enjoyed the talk on the phone today!
Sounds like a great hunt! As I said been having hard if not NO luck here this week!
Bet the long Range Ant. will help with your Garmin problems!
You might want to get some Bird Dog Boots to try when you go to tha Rocky Country.
I will have to get Dad to come up and sample some of that KS bad running, he has run some Cat on one of Turners ranches up north of Buffalo OK across the line into KS!
So Lond and keep the Cats Squatting!

John,
Yes I have hunted on the turner ranch.
Marion caught a cat that night.
I am sure if I had 2 of your dads dogs yesterday we would of caught that corn field cat. I do know that start dogs from the south are hot nosed up here at best.
My best dogs have age problem, have slowed down.
My young dogs just don,t have the speed yet, but they do carry the front end a lot.
Andy was kind of lost on the corn field cat, He don,t know about this open country
He is used to jungle type hunting. He done a really good job in a milo field the day before.
Where I was hunting is 800 miles from your house., Come for a hunt any time,
800 miles is not much of a step for a cat hunter. We got an extra house for hunters to stay in. We got big big ranches to hunt on 1000s & 1000s of acres. I would like to see the rig dogs work up here. We get one of these light snows one of these days we can see the cats tracks & dogs will have all the running they can stand.

From Florida to East TX, anywhere in the Southern Pine Forests a Cat Race can last from as little as 15 min(not counting the popup 5min ones) to as much as 3 hours depending on how bad the Briars or how much water there is for the Cat to run in!
This is ahead of Running bred Hounds.
In AR last week Glen ran a Good Cat in Bad, Bad Country 7:53 hours before having the Cat drop dead! They had poor scenting conditions and the Pack could not hold consistant pressure on the Cat till the last two hours!
Our average from last year according to my Log Book was just short of an hour. This was compiled from 186 races in 2008.
Good Running to All!

Re: Average Bobcat Race?
Hey thanks for the info guys. Very informative and just wanted to see how other peoples races stack up to ours. Ive only been on a couple but one I can remember, because it was the first I ever got to see/watch, was about 5 minutes. We were hunting all day, saw a few Lion tracks that were pretty old and frozen and couldnt get them going. They must of been early from the night before and it was getting close to dark again. We were driving down the road and it just started snowing hard. Big flakes and coming down good. I saw a track so I told my buddy to stop. Got out and looked at it, ended up being a pretty big Tom Bobcat track with no snow in it. It must of just crossed the road in front of us. Turned out my buddies dog from Travis Stireks walkers (Kid Rock) and he caught that bobcat in about 5 minutes. Heard him tree from the road we were on. Ended up being 40" from nose to end of tail and 25Lbs.
