Wormer

Post by Mr.pacojack »

Got this off another site. Have any of you used it?

For Tapes I use the equimax horse paste (contains ivermectin and pryzequintal). I chose the Equimax over Zemectrin gold becuase it had a higher concentration of the pryzequintal. The only other drug that will kill tapes is Drontal and it is more costly in most cases.

I think tube of Equimax is about $12 at Tractor Supply. For a 50-60lb dog I give a ribbon that is about 1in long.

It can be deadly when given to puppies. My vet said they can have it but it needs to be a minute amount. If you dose it like a big dog they are DEAD!

I try to avoid using ivermectin on puppies until 8mo.

ALSO: Do not squeeze straight from the tube. put it on your finger and then swab it on the back roof of their mouth.

I've used Zimectrin Gold quite a bit. Works well. I use it from the time they are about 45lbs + So I've used it on dogs 6 months old and as old as 12 years. Used it on pregnant females.

I try not to keep a tube around for long. After it sits a while it starts "seperating" and you can't be sure the dogs aren't getting too much of one thing, and not enough of another. But if you have a lot of dogs and use a tube up pretty quick it works well. Or on smaller numbers of dogs, use it two months in a row. I'm down to 3 dogs, so I haven't used it in a while.

Right now I just use Ivomec for heartworms monthly and use a multiwormer every three months.

I'm sure if it was stored right it should be okay. And it sure as hell saves money. It will wipe worms out too. I always tended to use just a little more than others said they did. The saftey of most of those ingredients are pretty good, and worms in dogs are the toughest to treat. Never had a dog get sick, or show any adverse effects; I always figure the dogs will just learn to get tough ;)

I started using the equimax about a year ago, seems to work good and is a lot cheaper. I usually put it in a a ball of hamburger meat. And yeah it can be leathal even to a full grown dog if given too much. Don't usually keep a tube around too long because it seems to seperate.

I have bought Pyraquantel from interpet and it works great, is priced right and the shipping is very reasonable.

I use the Pyraquantel from InterPet now that I'm down to just a few dogs. But nothing is cheaper and easier than picking up a tube of Zimectrin Gold at the feed store to do a large number of dogs at one time.

If you've got 8-12 average sized hounds, 100 tabs of Pyraquantel won't last too long.

A tube of Zimectrin costs about $18 and will do a lot of dogs.

I stay away from horse medicine for dogs, vet warns me against it as well. One less thing to worry about getting the kidneys.

I work for a Vet. He's warned me too. But tell me there aren't side effects and "this could happen" with everything you give your dogs. Horse products just haven't been tested on dogs. A Vet can't recomend you to do anything not labled so, they stick with what they KNOW. The biggest issue the Vets have is that sometime the contents in the pastes/tubes can separate, thus they may be getting more or less of something. But if it's a new tube, stored right, and used up right away, I can't see it being a huge problem.

I use the stuff from Interpet now I'm down to 3 dogs. But when I had 11 dogs, I used Zimectrin Gold.
