Idaho fall season

Post by Bayedup »

Well with the passing of our fall season and anticipating the cat season, just curious how everyone did. We had a okay fall, we try and mix elk hunting and bear hunting so it is usually busy. We caught some little fellows and was hoping to get a good bear we had caught during the spring season put up for my good friend.

The baits were way slow (mostly non existant) however in different parts of the state I heard that some people couldn't keep enough groceries on the bait. In the mornings while elk hunting my wife would drive around with the boys and strike some bears. Several of the races I could hear while I was up running the video camera for my brother working bulls and man was it hard to stay focused listening to the dogs running around down canyon.(My brother wasn't to impressed with my neglect behind the call and camera)

Trish and the boys caught a few and had some fun. . .

Man... whata woman. My wife's a good one at least she will feed, water, go track em if their lost and load em up, put em up, hunt with me when I ask her to and she has time but, will NOT take em out herself. I've asked her many times. :D :D

Later in the season, I had a good friend of mine come up from Southern Idaho to try and kill an elk and maybe put up a good bear. With it being hot and plenty of activity, we hunted for elk for the first two days and with people and the missing of a bull Scott decided we should go riggin for a bruin.
That night Scott and I walked into hunt a wallow, we sat it for awhile hoping it would cool down, about an hour before dark a bull started going on the next ridge up, we headed to him but he shut down quickly afterwards. Going out we hit a muddy spot in the trail by the wallow and noticed a good bear track on top of our boot tracks. I looked at Scott with a slght grin and said, " we aren't elk hunting this in the morning!"

But he was still bent on a little elk hunting.

The plan was for him and my brother to go into an area and see if they could get some bulls going and I'd give them a little time(sleep in!) before we started into the wallow with the hounds.
Well we got up and moving, 3 out of the 4, the oldest boy just turned over and went back to sleep. We free casted into the wallow and the dogs started popping a little they headed east into a nasty blow down thick with brush, from there they got things going a little better and headed up canyon out of hearing.
We backed out and started up the road listening and finally heard them bay/treed in a deep hole. Trish, Easton and I headed in. It took us a bit and when we finally got close I could see the bear way up a pole, trying to sneak in as best as we could I hear him pop his jaws and start firemaning it down the pole. We he comes down about 70mph right into 4 eager hounds and all hell breaks loose, bear and dogs for about forty yards them everything goes to boo hooin. We haul up the side of the draw and watch/video the dogs and bear walk up the bottom of the ravine. we stay with them for a bout 200 yards as the pace was slow then they break the ridge and shoot down the canyon and tree. This time we made it under them as he had gone out a little shelf, kind of a one way in and out deal. It was a good way to end the season, Scotty and Ryan showed up shortly afterward and had been on the ridge above them all morning listening the whole time.
Scott made a hell of a shot with his bow and got himself a great trophy.
Easton loves this more than anyone and tells the story of his Trapper dog and bear fighting on the ground. It was great!!
