Here is a picture of my patterdale. He loves to chase a bear but I don't let him chase to many because he thinks he can whip the world. He doesn't have much in the nose department, not compared to a hound anyways.I taught him to hunt grouse this year and he is pretty good at finding them.

That dog looks like more of a Jagd than a Patterdale is he a cross?
Chad85 I have run Jagds on and off for about 20 years. Their nose has not been what everyone claims to be. The best one I have ever owned is a little female I have now and she could maybe take a 2 to 3 hour old bear track.
I keep hearing of guys running an all Jagd pack of dogs on bear and lion but you see any pictures and they always have a hound or two in the pack. I personaly wouldn't believe it until you saw it .

Paco,he is a black and tan Patterdale. Not as common as chocolate or black but still an accepted color for Patterdales.Look up Patterdale on Wikipedia and the picture that comes up looks almost identical to my dog. Here is a link to the picture.

I always have mine along with me. They have proved themself very good on bobcats when they get in a rock pile or brush pile or a hole. And I will turn her loose after I get the hounds started, mostly because she is driving me crazy.
Trueblue, That is cool, I didn't know that. I have always seen them looking more like a mini pit bull.

Paco,I am certainly no authority on Patterdales but my understanding is that alot of them do have some Pit in them.Pat's are supposed to be small dogs about 12 inches high and 15 lbs.I think some Pit in there may be the reason alot of them seem to be much bigger than that.Seems to me that the black and tan color more resembles their ancestors...going back to the Fell Terriers and the Black and Tan Terrier before that.

That sure makes sence. How do you find the temperment of the Pats? Are they easy to handle? Grit? Nose?
Sorry chad85 just curious, I am always looking for a good den dog.

My Pat handles like a dream.I take him everywhere I go and he is no problem at all.He was very easy to train and is super compliant with whatever I ask him to do.He lives with 5 male hounds and I don't have any problems with him getting along even at the tree or in the box.I don't normally turn him out on bear races but I turn him into every tree.If he can here the hounds he will go to them..He ran a few races this year and was at the tree treeing when I got there. He is very focused on what is in the tree and doesn't really pay any attention to the other dogs. Now if another dog tries to start something with him he will damn well try and finish it and sometimes holds a grudge too.I would say that he has good grit but is not suicidal. However I don't think he would probably last too long if I turned him out on a lot of bears. He will dive right in the middle of a badger, especially if it is in the open.If it is in the thick brush or a hole he tends to bay and bite rather than load it.Had one in a culvert this summer and he ran right in and piled right into it and then backed off and bayed it right in its face.Every couple of minutes you would here him grab a hold again momentarily and then go back to baying. He did that for about 20 minutes before I finally got a hold of him and shot the badger. My first impression of his nose was that it was not very good but I think he just didn't know how to use it very well. When i took him out hunting for rabbits with a friends beagle he would mostly just run around land sharking LOOKING for something to jump on rather than use his nose. This fall I started him hunting grouse.First i found a few along the road and let him jump them up a tree and then shot them out to him.He seemed to like that alot and then started using his nose to hunt them up.My son and I ended up shooting about 15 or 20 grouse that he had hunted up himself. He even caught a couple. He seems to be using his nose a lot more now but I think he will always need the scent to be pretty hot.My dog is 12 inches high and 15 lbs so he is a nice size for going in holes and tight places. One thing I really like about this dog is that he is very mellow around the house. Not high strung at all but trips a switch when it is time to go hunting or retrieve a tennis ball. What is required of a den dog ? If I knew more about it I could tell you if I thought a dog like mine would be a good candidate.

some of the brits put staffy bull in them for working fox. but a lot of brits say it isn't needed and doesn't add anything.

this forum is a good place to learn about them in the earthdog & working terrier section but you have to join to even read anything.
