Re: best type of snow machine for cat hunting???
i have tried the skidoo tundra and it just doesn't have enough snort to haul the dogs without over heating and eventually burning up with time, i have also used several types of liquid cooled sleds and had over heating problems so i use a yamaha phaser which is a fan cooled machine and it works great for me

I think for me I would love to have a Ski Doo Back Country. Very lite, turns sharp, and a good little sled for somebody that has small dogs to haul around. I have 3 friends with Tundras that have had them for years and all love them. For people that hunt bigger dogs a Ski Doo Skandic would probably sute better.
Dont be a fool cover your tool. When in doubt cover your spout.

I use a bearcat, with a 154x15" track. goes anywhere that I need to. Not much for breaking trail up hill in the deep stuff.

I have a 2002 Polaris 600 RMK that I put a mechanical reverse into,it is liquid cooled and has enough power to haul 4 dogs easily.
2" paddles and a 134" track offer lots of traction and manuverability.
I also have a Tundra which is great for some spots but when it gets nasty the Polaris is very tough to beat.

Re: best type of snow machine for cat hunting???
The type of sled that is best is going to depend on the terrain you're hunting in. For the steep mountainous country I hunt where the snow is deep and the roads are drifted over, top of the line powder sleds are the way to go. Tundras and Skandics may work fine in other areas of the country, but they don't always have the muscle to pull dogs into the backcountry around here.
My current sled is a 04 Polaris RMK 800 with a 151" track that I have used the last three years. It's been dependable, has the muscle, and has a tough enough frame to handle the stress of pulling a sled full of dogs through rough country. I like Ski Doo's new XP's as far as climbing ability and handling, but they have lightened up the chasis to where I don't know whether the frame can take the abuse of hound hunting.
Sled technology has come a long way since my first sled, a 1967 Ski Doo Olympic. I'm sure you can find a sled that fits the way you hunt.

if you aint hunting to deep of snow but need the power get an alpina snowmobile. Very strong but expensive.
Re: best type of snow machine for cat hunting???
I use a mountain cat 800-I feel a 600 would do it but i ride without dogs some for fun-My biggest reccomendation would be reverse and secondly four stroke-something you can lugg around-I would like four stroke but I mountain ride also-Ive had an 80s model while mine was in the shop=It got the job done-Any sled a person can afford is a plus-good luck and good huntin!

The 2010 Ski Doo Tundra looks like the ultimate cat hunting sled.... They quit making the Tundra's with the 300's in them, all 500's now.
