most hounds make good family pets, but they are not for everyone. people on this board are primarily interested in hunting them. they can be both at the same time.

here's an article that describes what its like to keep a coonhound as a pet--

if you think its funny, you will do well with a pet redbone. If you find that horrifying, you better keep hounds out of your house.

these two boards discuss coonhounds as pets:

There's more differences between individuals within a coonhound breed than there is between the breeds as a whole. A b&t X redbone shouldn't be all that different in temperament from a purebred B&T, except in coloring. Of course if your B&T is at one extreme and the X is at the other extreme, they could have very distinctive personalities, but they will probably get along.
Some of the AKC b&T's have less hunt in them than most because they were bred for show.
I have two redbones. One is impatient, hyper, and mischievous, the other calm, elegant, and calculating. One will sit and bark at a problem all day. The other will seem to ignore it while he figures out a way to solve it. Neither is entirely trustworthy when left alone in a room with human food accessible. Both are extremely affectionate, reliable with kids, and will take themselves hunting whenever they find a weak spot in the fence.
