looking for a bluetick

I would recommend that you pull UKC and go to their message board. Then go to Coonhound Classified and look under Bluetick. There will be lots of listing of blue dogs for sale of various breeding and many will have photos. I like the smaller to medium size dogs that are very athletic with good noses. I do not really breed for "hard treeing abiltiy" like most coon hunters for I think that leads to other problems and I do not think it is necessary when hunting bobcats and coons in my country. I have 4 hounds at this time and plan to breed a three year old female back to her uncle in the next six months or so.
I suggest that you get in touch with a veteranian out of Oklahoma City by the name of Rudy Garrison. He has some nice blues primarily Smokey River that he hunts on lion and bobcat. He hunts around the Grants, NM area for lion and bobcats in OK.
I have purchased three hounds from Dennis Upson through the years. He lives in Northern Wisconsin and has some pups for sale at this time. His dogs have excellent confirmation, good speed and good noses. They are not as gritty as some but should work well on cats and coon. He has pups advertised in the classified section here. He is a really nice guy.

JIM i have hunted all breeds and i like my walkers for bear and cat but of course everybody is dif its what works for u and trial and eror to it took me a long time to open my eyes and find what i like and i have them now and will never go back. good luck in ur journey jim

I have two cameron bred hounds and like them. If i was looking i would try to find someone cloos by were you live that has some blue hounds and go hunt with them. Don't jump at the first hound to come along .

This I think is some good advice. See what lines everyone around you is running, hunt with them and see how you like them. I think the local dogs are the way to go. There is a reason they are still hunting in that area..

BTW.. Aren't you friend with Cody? He has that little Ace pup?

If you are going to concentrate on lion and hunt primarily dry ground, a Cameron bred hound might be what you need. I don't think that you need as much speed for this game as you would on bobcat or bear. It sounds to me that you need nose most of all. There are several breeders in Utah that have this breeding. Rudy Garrison from the OKC, OK area has blue hounds that he uses on bobcats and lions on the Grants, NM area. Most of his dogs go back to Smokey River breeding and from what I understand, has some really nice hounds. He is a Vet and works the race tracks.

Good luck in finding a bluetick.. You might send a pm to Robbie, he goes by bluedogs on here. He got himself a nice Cameron dog off a guy that used to live around here. The guy moved to Idaho, but Rob might know how to get a hold of him still... That guy (the one with the Camerons') knows what the hell a good dog is....

Thanks melanie I will tell cody to keep you in touch. But if I get a cameron I think that i will get one from Del so I can finaly get to see montana.

Is there another breeder that has the dark bluetick the camerons that I have seen are real dark more black than anything else.

A tough journey you have ahead of you indeed. To find a dog that suits you that wears the color you want. There are good and bad in all colors, like people.

I have said it before, and will say it as long as it holds true. DJ Mcleod on this site has good blue dogs for sale time to time. They are Jet bred, and some Hammer breeding too. Hammer and Jet are usually associated with Nite hunts, but DJ takes the ones that show Big Game qualities and breeds them, and they work.
I have two of them that work for me. Pinch is smaller in size, 40 or 45 pounds, and he can tree bobcat, coon and bear. Next spring I will know how he did on Lion this winter. He likes to drift a track, this helps him make up ground on them short tail. Shorty has got more leg then his brother, so he runs right at 56 pounds when he was at the vet getting stitched up after a bear got hold of him. Shorty has a bit colder nose then his brother, I use him to start cats in the winter, and bear at the baits.
I know DJ was happy with the pups he has been hunting out of Pinch on bobcat and bear.
