Re: Fox Hunting
I suppose your talking greys, I have never run them so I'm not sure. But i do hunt reds, not very good at it but sometimes i get lucky. I run a beagle walker mix and she's decent. If you are interested in reds PM i'll do my best to tell you what I know...

Re: Fox Hunting
I don't think it matters what breed but you are going to want a fast dog so it can put enough presure on the fox to force it to climb. From what most say on this board those fast dogs are in every breed.
My fox/bobcat dog is 1/2 walker and 1/2 lab... he does help tree lions and bears too but realy loves the bobs and foxes.

Re: Fox Hunting
You kind of want to stay away from the running hounds if you want tree a grey fox, the are hard to make them to sit down and tree. You would be better of tryin a walker cross with a little runnin dog with them. When I ran fox in so. cali. the costal brush is real thick so I had walkers with some cur and begale in them. The walker was for the lungs, the cur seems to make them alittle bit smarter on how to drift a track and the begale to shorten the legs on the dog

Re: Fox Hunting
I agree with AZcoondogs, You gotta watch getting to heavy on the running dog side. But a little shouldn't hurt. I Grayfox and cat hunt, but primarily tree fox and have been doing it for many years. To me..........there's nothing like it. I hunt 3-4 walkers. But any breed can catch them of course.
I'm not sure about the rest of the country, but around here it's kind of a competitive thing. It's not uncommon to hunt with another guy "for bragg'in rights". People that are hard core fox and cat hunters around here like to keep fast dogs and to get your dog "throwed" out of a good fox race or have your dog be way behind all the time is a little humiliating. So most folks try to keep fast dogs.

Re: Fox Hunting
Your right Everlast there is nothin like listening to a good 4to5 hour fox race with a bunch of hounds makeing music. I used to hunt up in the Sespe area around Fillmore. We had a july dog once hell of a runner, but the problem was she made it a one dog race instead of a pack race, she would tree until she saw your lights coming and she would take off and start her another race. I was just wondering if they still hold trade days in Arroyo Grande.

Re: Fox Hunting
Have you ever hunt up in high mountain why your there? My granddad Ceil Little and me got stuck up there between the creek and the backside of the mountain for 3 days. It rained that night and the creek rose and the backside going down go to sloppy to go down. Had to hunt just 1 mile streach of road for those days. When Lesley was alive I used to have to ride in the truck with him to point out where his dogs where runnin
Re: Fox Hunting
he is a mix of saluki (arabian greyhound) and cold & hotblood greyhounds. he is sort of line bred his father is also his maternal grandfather. his parents have been used & bred for jackrabbit & the occassional coyote. he has also caught squirrell, rabbit, possum, coon, skunk (two times too many),feral cat & feral hogs and one deer.
Re: Fox Hunting
I have run alot of red fox and fast hounds put to much pressure to them and make them hole up. a beagle is good one for reds. on grays i would use any hound that trees with a cold nose. one hound is enough for fox hunting.
