Friday was a good day dogs made it home

Post by inchtowntracking »

Last sunday about 11:00 am me and my cousin turned out our older dog and one of our pups on a bobcat track. After working the track for a little bit they start on a run and two miles later of going up and down some steep country, they are treed. :D
We get to where they crossed up this steep clear cut and found out they was chasing a long tail cat. Our garmin showed that we was half a mile away with no way to get to the dogs other then straight up the clear cut in knee high snow. Well the closest we got to the dogs was three hundred yrds, and by then the cat must of got bored because it bailed and all we could see was our dogs taking off on the garmin up and over the other side of the mountain.
This is the point our Garmin lets us down  , when they broke over to the other side of the mountain the garmin loses signal. So we wait for a bit and see if it comes back, when it doesnt find the dogs we head home to get the snow mobiles to try and get to a spot to pick them back up. After talking with someone who knows the country on the other side of the mountain a little better then us, we head out to try and pick up a signal. But no luck and about nine at night and in single diget weather we give up for the night the Garmin couldnt get a signal.
We have spent all week looking on sleds and driving roads, it has been in the teens during the day and single didgets at night with a pretty good wind all day and night. So we laid out blankets where we dropped on the bob cat track and on another road they might come down on also with a little food for them to eat if they make it off the mountain. Well my cousin checked the spots on friday to find two skinny dogs excited to see him. :D We have them home now and they are starting to put back on a little weight. So we are now looking into to getting a beep beep system to go with the garmin as a back up.
Bucknaze The real MOOSE dog has made it home  and Piglet you will have to take back the parvo and distemper comments back now, because these dogs are alive and happy to be home!!!

Haha the real Moose dog! I like that, we'll see who the real moose is. Those dogs did pretty good considering it was probably negative temps during the night up there without the wind, it was -13 on top of Desautel without the wint, probably -20 with it. Talked to your cousin and he said that he found them, glad to hear it. We got another dog, Piglet knows all about it, should be throwing some cats up here on Monday night/tuesday now. After the REAL moose dog gets that taste of the 1st one.....its over! hahaha good luck and glad you guys found the dogs, I know your cousin was getting a little bummed there for awhile. I would be too.

Yeah it would of been a really hard hit on us, to lose our best track dog and our best treeing dog too. We would of been left with pups and no trainer for them.

Which is your better tree dog? Moose? I know mine is probably better at trailing then treeing, but he's getting better. He can smoke a damn track no problem, just his treeing ability on bears wasnt the best, haha. Did some more training and he looked golden though. Granted he is a couple months older now though. My other pup must be part greyhound because she is almost too fast for her own good

Yeah Moose is our best treeing dog, rocket is good to but she will put her nose to the ground and search around the tree to make sure it is there. Moose just knows it is there, damn dog will actually get a running start to try and climb the tree to get to what ever he has up there. He will even do flips when he is on the chain at home. The other pups do the same thing as rocket, and will search around on the ground.
