Here is the best info I've read on this topic. I wish I could remember who posted it to give them the credit.

Worming: [Hookworms and Roundworms] I worm all litters and
their mother with Pyrantel Pamoate (Embonate is the same) at 3, 5,
7, 9, 11, and 13 weeks and then every six months, unless using
Pyraquantal which contains Pyrantel Embonate. Pyrantel is the
active ingredient in Nemex, Strongid etc.....but much cheaper...
read the labels...Pyrantel is the state-of-the-art hookworm/
roundworm expeller. Liquids are better...more accurate dosage...

[Tapeworms] Droncit or Praziquantel... Both are prescription, but
Praziquantel is in Pyranquantal...so you can get by without it. There
are only two wormers that will get all 7 varieties of tapes. There are
several highly advertised ones that get a variety or two. Might as
well use the best when it is cheaper anyway! Use Droncit or
Pyraquantel at about 6 weeks age. Pyranquantel tabs are good for 22
pounds each and scored 4 ways for easy correct dosage.

[Heartworms] The only effective safe treatment available is
Ivermerctin...period...Ivomec is the brand name I use. Heartguard
has the same in it (Heartguard Plus has Pyrantel too), but is some-
thing like 15 times as expensive. I like Ivomec injectible 1% of the
cattle/swine type. (Don't use Ivomec Plus!!! Bad! Bad! It has a deadly ingredient for dogs.) I use the Ivomec orally every 45 days all year.
Ivomec gets a small percentage of rounds, whips, and hooks...but is
not good enough...You can start Ivomec safely at 5 weeks of age
and I always do. Dosage is safe at 1/10 cc/ml per 10 pounds. that is
a little more than needed, but safe and easier to figure. I mix with
grape juice or whatever when dosing and just squirt it in the mouth.

[Wipworms] Oxantel...prescription/patent drug owned by Bayer. The
only real good choice. It is also in Pyranquantal. I used Panacur (bunamide) and Safeguard liquid (fenbendazole) for years for whips.
They take 6 treatments over 63 days to get whips and cost more than
using Drontal Plus. Now I use Pyranquantel which is 15 times cheaper than Drontal Plus.

All of the above can be given with or without food and have NO
contraindications whatsoever.

Pyranquantel is the same as Drontal Plus. It is cheap and costs $2-3
per dog and per worming instead of $40 or more depending on your
vet and sources. Run a search for it. I don't know that by heart. I can send it later though, if you don't find it.

Vaccination: I sart at weaning with a Fort Dodge or Vanguard that overrides the mother's milk. They are puppy shots and safe, but
they are more expensive, but worth it to me. Then I alternate every
two weeks with a different vaccine usually a Vanguard 5-way, then a
Fort Dodge 7-way, then a 7-way plus from either company. Alternate
7-way plus types until 16 weeks old...then one at 6 months and a
booster at age one. I give a booster to all dogs every year. I do it in
June every year. If I get a dog, I give an extra shot to make sure it is covered and then again (even if soon) in June. This gets them on my schedule!

Canex and Pyraquantal are the exact same formula as Drontal Plus. They both contain Praziquantel (gets all 7 types of tapeworms), oxantel (gets the whipworms) and pyrantel (gets the hookworms and roundworms). These are the best wormers available. There are no contraindications and you don't have to starve the dog first or anything. It works whether the dog's stomach is full or empty. It is safe for puppies at 5 weeks.

Drontal is just pyrantel and droncit..so you won't touch the whipworms (which is the toughest to eliminate and the hardest on dogs). Nemex, Strongid and several others are just pyrantel, which can be bought a lot more cheaply in a pure form. Pyrantel should be used for puppies (and nursing bitches), every two weeks starting at 3 weeks of age until 16 weeks of age. The Drontal Plus, Canex and Pyraquantal are the same formula, but the Canex and Pyraquantal can be bought from foreign sources more cheaply. They are just generic copies of Drontal Plus. The foreign sources do not have to abide by U.S. patent laws. That is why Drontal and Drontal Plus are so expensive and you need a prescription.
Bayer owns the patents on them.

If you use Pyraquantal or Canex plus ivermectin you will be keeping your dogs essentially worm free.

I have been using Canex and Ivomec for years with no problems (and no worms). Dean gave you a very lengthy and correct description, but his last sentence (and my First) says it all. Do that and no worry about any worms.

As for vaccinations I do not use nearly as much as some. I wait one month after weaning to be sure the mother's immunity has cleared out, then give one seven way shot, wait one month and give another, then a last one at 6-8 months. Been doing this for 20+ years and never had a problem. I do not vaccinate yearly as my vet told me (believe this or not) that it is NOT necessary. He did say that if my dogs were often exposed to other's dogs that he would vaccinate them every 3 years.

It has now been proven that annual rabies vaccinations are also overkill and several states have dropped that requirement.

We've pretty much always used Fort Dodge and never had any problems. It's the exact same shot that all the vets around here give.

Most time when shots don't work, they haven't been kept properly. There is a reason they ship them to you with a cold pack.
