new to site and to hounds

Post by blong »

I have a walker that was given to me about a year ago when her owners were moving. I have done a lot of hunting, but never ran dogs. She is about 3 years old, is she too old to start training, I would like to use her for bears. I really don't even know how to start training her for hunting. Any advise?

She might be a little old but I am no expert, it's worth a try get some bear scent and lay some drags and see what happens. The easiest thing to do is find out if there is somebody near your that could help you out, or go to the training tips section and start asking questions. Good luck Lance

thanks for the info, I did get some scent over the summer and I was dragging it all over the yard and then hid it up in a tree. she would find it no matter wher I put it. I even hid it in the BBQ thinking she would get confused by the meat scent, she found it right away. Well I guess I just keep working with her and take her out in the forest once and a while on a leash to see what she does.

Sounds like your on the right track, if your planning on turning her out you might have a hard time with one green dog. if your in bear country look for some help to turn her in behind or see if you can pick up another dog. It 's a long hard road on your own believe me. good luck Lance

Definetly not too old, just has to want to hunt. If you have a dog that wants to then thats half the battle, next is just getting them to trail and getting them on some game. Started my dog last year and she is 5 years old. Lots of good guys out there to help you Im sure, and lots of good guys on here for advice! Take the advice, you will be glad you did.
