Longest your hound has run a fox or bobcat and caught it?
Just wondering about your longest race and caught the varmint? Mine is 2 hours anything over that and the varmint gets away
Re: Longest your hound has run a fox or bobcat and caught it?
I have had similar experience. Actually, if a bobcat race lasts over an hour, my chances are getting slim to none. Either the dogs are hurting from being hunted constantly, have a touch of swine flu, torn up feet or whatever, or crust or other unfavorable condition is making it impossible to close the gap. As you can see, my excuses are well rehearsed
The longest race I have had and treed the cat was 6 hours. It was a good day that will not soon be forgotten. But it was a fluke; dogs got extrememly lucky, cat got extremely unlucky, and I dont expect to be able to repeat it.
I have had a few coon races that lasted a couple hours. Dogs wide open full speed straight line for the next county, or next Country as the case may be. Then I get the line on em and just about to catch em and let em have it. BAM! treed! and they got the coon. HA HA. Been to a few night hunts where the deer/coon race won the hunt
Those dogs learn what's coming if they dont come up with a coon real fast. I am dating myself though, because folks with remote shockers are not probably going to experience this too much. Cant use em in the competition hunts though.
wonder if you can guess which breed I was hunting

Probably the longest I have ever ran a fox and then caught it on top the ground is between 2.5 to 3 hours. That is a red fox or grey fox. Most races dont last that long if hounds are up on him like they outta be. They get caught or go in/up before then. This is in the daylight as that is all I hunt. Night time chases last longer here, 10-12 hrs on red foxs sometimes.
I had a day running in drilled soybeans one day where we ran grey foxes for 7 hour straight (not all the same fox), and never caught a dang thing. It was 3 of us hunting dogs, and it was embarrassing, to run that long in crops and never sink tooth in one, of heck even run one in the hole. we jumped a fox when we turned loose at 6 am and started catching them at 1pm. My dad has left because we were supposed to be cutting corn, and he couldnt believe we didnt catch a single fox over that period of time.
I learned you win some you loose some. Sometimes it feels more like ya loose some, ya get embarrassed some.

Redmange,
Years ago Dad ran a Bobcat in East Texas, and ran him not trailed for just over 8 (eight) hours before catching him on the ground. Actually the Cat was still alive laying in a mud puddle with the Hounds laying around him to tired to do anything but bark every now and them. Dad and Buster Moore from Huntsville TX were young men them and had been walking following the Hounds for the last part of the Race and were not far away at the end.
In September Glen Rybard in AR ran a Cat 7:54 before the Cat fell over dead as there was no bay or fight. Glen marked the end of the Race track on his Garmin and walked in to retrieve the Cat and said it looked as if the Cat died in mid-stride.
Both of these were avg. size Sow Cat.
On both of these occasions the scenting conditons were not good as the Hounds could not hold tight pressure on the game. Thus allowing the Game to do what it wanted to do for much longer than normal.
As we said in an earlier post our recordes from last year show that the avg. length of a Race was just under an hour. This was from 186 Races that lasted longer than 5 min. This year todate we are at 173 Races that were not pop ups and are running just slightly longer than an hour.
Not Scientific just what we have found here in the Southeastern US. With better Hounds the Races would have been shorter.

I am not much of a cat hunter, so my dogs aren't really geared as cat dogs. We get some snow, they try their best (without much help from us) and we see how it plays out.
In any case, the longest race I can remember where we actually got the cat was 7 hours. But it wasn't really stopped by the dogs, more like it faced the firing squad with buckshot. I think we jumped the cat in about 15 minutes and then started a long series of screwups. They got out of pocket on us and then we got trucks stuck, flat tires, guys lost and blew up tracking boxes. It was really pretty remarkable for 4 guys and 2 trucks. Hell, we were just trying to find the damn dogs when we faintly heard them still working on this cat. The guy with the tag snuck in, dogs made a swing, and bingo done deal. The dogs were chewing on it nearly before it fell over. I bet we didn't hear more than 30 minutes of the entire race. Too bad cause it would have been a real good one to listen to.

Actually started a bobcat this last tuesday after daylight about an hour and caught him bout 4 o clock. I have had other races that were bout as long but he was the longest bobcat race ive had. Unfortuatly after all the work the dogs gave me i made it up to the ledge he was on and about to get my gun out and he bailed and never got to tag that one.

I run yotes for 4 or 5 hours all the time and end up killing them in the end. Usually they are dead within 1 or 2 hours tho.

Off topic but how many dogs do you guys run on bobcats, in the snow. We usually run 2 as to not mess up the scent too much but do any of you run more without any problems?
