Snowmobile question

Post by blackpaws »

Any motor heads on here? i have an older polaris snowmobile that i bought that hasn't been run much. i start it and it runs fine on a block with the track off the ground. i drop it down and get going 100 yards and it dies down and quits. i then choke it and it starts and i go 100 yards and it dies down and quits again. i pulled the old gas out and put new in and some sea foam treatment in. Any suggestions on what to try? i am going to try a new in-line gas filter. the last time it was run hard was 2 years ago. Any info or suggestions is appreciated.

that and take carb off and clean it out also take the fuel pump off and you will probably find it has water and or debris under the diaphragm clean them both out good and you should be all set . the fuel lines would be suspect also they sometimes seem to deteriorate easy with this new gas and the debris will clog the jet under the needle like jason said the carb runs out of gas thats why you have to choke it to keep it running .

Seems like I've spent half my life working on broke down sleds........ :x

Try the new fuel filter and give the carb a good hosing inside and out with carb cleaner first and see if that solves your problem. I'm thinking it will. If not, you may have to really get your fingers greasy and try some of those other things mentioned.

Take your jets out of the carb and run a safety pin or something like that through them, there's a good chance one is plugged and your only running off one side. Of course this all ties in with the other answers about cleaning the carbs. I would bet one of your jets being plugged is the problem, especially since it hasn't been run for a while.

BP, Everything said is right on. Clean the carb well. Real simple to clean the jets and everything out. Make sure the choke is working right if it has one. If not it could cause the problem you mention. Just did everything that was mentioned to mine. Then the choke wires came off the lever. SO it would choke itself out. $4 fix to that.

Anyhue also clean that fuel pump out. Can get a gasket rebuild kit for $15. If you got a repair shop around you can get a rebuilt one for around $25.

If dual carbs be sure they are set equally. so one does not work against the other. Simple as well. Just push the throttle and stick your finger in the carbs and feel if the pistons are at the same level.

Really though it sounds like a fuel pump. As it sounds like when you are giving it gas it is starving out with more demand. Which is not a problem at idle or with no load. Make sure there is no pinching of lines.

I had pretty much the same thing with my indy sport.

Cleaned carbs(not dirty at all) New fuel filter. Still would bog down at higher speeds. New fuel pump and and BAAM. Back to normal. Well until the choke lever froze and I pulled the lines out. So $3 fuel filter, $25 fuel pump, $4 choke lever, and little time. All is well again.

Also DO NOT USE SEA FOAM!!! My sled shop guy says that!!! It will make the lines hard and prone to breaking. Also is supposed to change the mix enough to cause some problems. He says to add nothing but premium gas. At least that is what I am supposed to do. He says everyone else can dump all the crap they want in the tank. It keeps him in business.

By the way for comparison for you. My Polaris is a 90 Indy Sport.

Hope this helps ya!

i don't know what fixed it but i replaced the screen on the end of the pick up line in the tank, new in-line fuel filter, took both carbs off and cleaned them with carb cleaner and wiped them out real good, put a new diaphram kit in the fuel pump and wiped it out good and now it runs like brand new. thanks for the ideas but i just went ahead and didi it all.

Joe, you should know better than to brag on how good a sled runs. It seems to me I spent more time pulling on the start rope than riding. Just look at the hunting accident post and that will tell you my thoughts on a sled.  later, Andy
