Re: Favorite Bear Gun and why? (caliber and model)
i prefer as heavy as possible with the best shot placement . Out of tree 12 ga mag slugs.
Bayed bear the 454 casul. I have seen lots of bears with literally their hearts blown apart that still ran another 100 + yards . For a variety of reasons I have been with guys using the Win Model 94 lever in 30-30- or 32 special that just could not seal the deal with 1 shot . Most lady hunters will also confirm that bigger is better

44 mag does the J-O-B but I don't mess around with standard 230 grain bullets in most hunting loads... I shoot 320 grain hard cast bullets at 1,350 fps. With some practice it can be shot with one hand.

For all of you guys packing .45-70 or .44 mag for "dangerous" situations, do yourself a favor and buy some Garrett ammo.

Not cheap..........but not cheap either, it's going to go in there and get the job done.

Winchester Mod. 88 in .308 gets it done. If you go 30-30 at least use the Hornaday leverevolution ammo. .308 works for our snipers and it works for me

I use my deer rifle. Ruger M77 Mark2 Compact in .308win. Only weighs about 6 1/2 lbs carries well and I know how it shoots, plus it allows me to not have to change guns all the time or keep track of different ammo in my pocket.

45-70 here. Cut off, shorter then guide model, I had it done before the guide existed. Hand Load 400 grains, peep sight, Its chills them. I've chased bear down, shot with other calibers, are we talking killing a bear, or killing a bear fighting, two different deals in my opinion. Guys show up with lighter calibers, and scopes, I just hand them betty lou, she gets it done. LOL

What do you look for? Lever action? Bolt action? Pistol? Barrel length? Weight?
Marlin 45-70, peep sight, 300 grain or more. That combo has knock down power and penatrates.Thats what works for me.Ive seen kills that were night mares with other calibers though they should have made clean kills. It all comes down to bullet placement.

Re: Favorite Bear Gun and why? (caliber and model)
Ibelieve the 45-70 marlin guide gun is the best for total knockdown power on a bear, especially if the bear ison the ground you can get in close and fire a fatal shot without injuring any dogs. Besides you want to kill the bear not wound it.
Re: Favorite Bear Gun and why? (caliber and model)
A marlin youth 30-30 will do anything you need done. Have been do this for 15 years and killed at least one a year it hasnt let me down yet.
