What are RODS

Post by Tim Cook »

So my wife and I got a book for an anniversary present, Treeing Walker History and Memories, written by Lester Nance. In it he talks how the dogs took the track eighty rods to the north then turned and went sixty rods to the east and treed. how far is a rod or what is a rod. :?:

I don't know what the actual distance is, but that sounds about right. The only place I've really seen it is on canoeing maps that show the distances for portages. All I know is the more rods, the more it's gonna suck packing your crap.

That is a great book, and as you read thru it you will notice Lester who was a farmer used a number of saying that are not too common today.

In field measuement they still use the rod measuement. I found this out working with a brother in law of mine when I was younger and we were measuring wheat fields for the CRP programs.

I guess just a quickier way to add up tilled or planted acreage.

We still use the bushel measurement quite a bit but you seldom here of the "peck" measurement these days.

I asked an old lionhunter one time how far he firgured a lion would travel in a night.

He thought about it real hard and then said. I reckon he will go about twice as far as half. and he left it at that. LOL!
