running west coast Bobs no snow

How are u guys gettin your dogs to run Bobs on the coast with no snow. How u starting the race to best way too train. Genral conversion on techicies used

if you already have a dog that will run a bobcat and you trust to be broke then you have the hard part accomplished. then you either road them through the cat crossings, or box them. if you have a dog that strikes off the box then when they strike let them down so they can find the track and start it. if you can get the track started, then its fish on!!!

if you have a young dog that needs training i would buddy up with someone who has good broke dogs to help you along the way. if thats the case, its a long road to hoe with no one to help you get started. mike leonard has some good advice on training on this forum in the training section. as for training a dog to strike off the box, it can be done a couple differant ways. just depends on what you already have for a dog to start with.

thats how we do it! i dont know what else to say other than to get the dogs in the woods because they dont learn anything in the kennel or the dog box!

Happydog don't overlook there is heavy thick brush on the coastal front, which i believe helps holds some scent because cats have to brush up against that nasty jungle over there! The other thing is for the average the temperatures run about 40degrees with alot of precipitation and humidity. So conditions for scent is usually pretty good, now it rains alot so that can hurt conditions till it stops if it does. I have hunted over there several times and with good dogs you can hunt them without the snow pretty successfully!

PIglet nailed it in the head. We have so much moisture around here scenting is generally good. And the brush is a big benefit also. So many of my strikes are where the cat has rubbed up against a bush and mostlikely sprayed. The dogs will strike this and I put them down. Alot of the time they will just dink around but so much of the time they can work out a track from this. Pay attention to cats in the snow, as they hit the road they will generally always pass by or go under a small tree or bush and watch they will always stop and do something there????????/
This is why you dont hardly here of anyone dry ground hunting in other parts of the US. Except for down south where you get back into humidity and brush.

We would have it made here if only we had a huge cat population..................

like stated b4 even if they mill around on a pissin post here and there every time your dog gets off the box there is cat scent there. they should look for it after a while, having a good rig dog will do you a great amount of training.
