Hank the hound dog needs a hunting buddy in Southern AZ

Postby dsandquist45 » Sun Jan 17, 2010 12:35 am

Hank is my treeing walker/blue tic hound who is dying to tree a cat. He is a little over a year old and has been training his whole life for this, the only problem is that I can not take in another dog and that leaves a pretty weak pack of 1 hound, and despite him constantly bugging me to go after one solo, i dont feel right about it. I need more dog power!!

He really does have a great nose but I would like to hunt him with atlease one more hound so if anyone wants to hunt in AZ for mt lions and you have atleast one hound and some knowlege, i would like to meet up and do some hunting. I am not greedy about beeing the shooter, it would be nice, but mostly I want the expereince for myself and Hank.

I am not new to the outdoors...I have been bowhunting my whole life and just went rifle hunting last Nov for the first time and got a little cues buck. I moved here from Oregon and most of my hunting has been for oregon elk and deer in central OR and blackbear in Hells Canyon.

I am in the military and am able to take leave most anytime i need to. please let me know if you live in the tucson area as I would love to find some more houndsmen down here.

Not really sure what else to say but if you have any questions please ask.

Thank you

Thanks for the compliment on Hank and for the luck. I moved three years ago from Colton (50 mi south of Portland). I still travel back up there every September for elk. It is hard to get an elk tag down here and i have to get my fix for elk somehow. I have always hunted on the Santiam pass but there is so much hunting pressure there the past few years after the fires that I am headed to the Alsea unit to chase some Rosies...a lot tougher but I can not stand running into people when I think there is no one around for miles. not to mention less elk year after year.

I see things around in the news every now and then about lifting the "ban" on persuing big game with hounds in oregon. Have you heard anything about that? It killed me last Sept when i was elk hunting and came across some fresh Cougar tracks in the sand...i had my hound with me at camp and a tag in my pocket but regs are regs...hopefully someday we can have that right back.

you can dang sure catch a lion with one dog my advice is to go hunt take him to spots were you know a tom scratches get out in good lion country and just make a circle you mite cut a track you mite cut something you can catch get in there and try and figure out what your trailing so you can call him off if your trashin if your worried about him gettin killed by a lion that could happen know matter how many dogs you have there you never know what could happen you just gota try

they had a lion petition going around and are trying to get it on the ballot in 2012 i believe. and yeah it is tough when you go out trying to find bobbers and you cut 7 different lion tracks and have to turn the other cheek. alsea is a dang good unit for bear as well as elk. I had a spring bear tag there a few years back, didnt see any but there was a heck of alot of sign and some of my friends that have had that tag have got some nice ones over the years. good luck down there with the hunting of all phases. father inlaw has drawn two tags in the last three years in az and killed a 372 and a 427 both of which were self guided and on public. the man has a 6th sense when it comes to hunting. anyhow good luck and get that dog goin on them lizzards ha ha.

I'll be sure to get a bear tag when I head over to the Alsea unit, i cant remember but i am pretty sure that whole unit is open to bear during the fall. Anyways tell your father in law to quit applying for elk in AZ and give us newbies a chance...just kidding, i think it is great he is getting drawn and even more inportantly actually filling them with nice bulls.

well good luck wuith everything and let me know if there is anything I can do to help out with any hound hunting petition or whatnot...i am still an Oregon resident and vote as one.
