This is a grey fox but simular race to a bobcat so posting it here hope no one minds.
Jake started cold trailing this one early this morning near our fence. Trail took us up to the crest of the hill, about 1/4 mile away where he seemed to stall out. I caught up to him and saw that he was still trailing so left him to it while I made my way back. He was not opening at all but I heard him running in the thick brush heading back down hill in a big arc. I kept walking in that direction along game trails taking a more direct route. Got to the bottem of the hill and heard mexican jays scoldling something so I hurried in that direction and saw them mobbing this guy in the tree.
I could hear Jake up on the slope still trying to puzzle out the trail. I waited a quietly a few minutes and watched Jake come strait to the tree and climb up a bit and then finaly start barking treed.

Re: Beat my dog to the tree this morning!
That happened to me one night coonhunting. Dumped the dogs in a little creek bottom and kind of followed along uphill from them. They struck and worked a track uphill to the tree I was leaning against. I couldn't believe it, but there he sat looking at us.

I just love that dog man. I'd like to have an old messed up mongrel like that.
