Second times the charm

Post by TomJr »

Its too nasty outside today so I was looking at some pictures and saw this guy and thought he was worth posting.

I ran him twice didn't catch the first time or at least I could not see him that day.

Back the middle of Dec I was unloading the truck and my two main dogs was supervising. I happend to look down the driveway and notice a stump where there should not be one. I did a dubble take and realized it was a big bobcat sitting watching me and the dogs. I yelled bobcat and got the dogs all excited but they didn't look far enough down so didn't see it bolt back into the woods. Walked the dogs down towards where it disapeared and they finaly scented it and took off.

This guy was a runner, first jumped run we have had that took over an hour. Started thinking someone musta imported an eastern bobcat  When they finaly barked treed I was happy. Started to the dogs and they stoped barking... ohoh Got to them and they are running about a small area and keep going back to one big sycamore that is hollow at the base and also has a big hollow opening 30' up. So I think maybe its inside that tree and bang on it as well as poking a stick up the hole, nothing. Humm I tryed to get the dogs to swing wide and maybe pick up the trail but they can't find where it left. Was getting dark so gave up, didn't think we would ever see that one again.

1st Week of January my dogs strike close to the fence and start running a very simular race to that dec race and this one goes for about 45 mins. They are barking treed and sounds like the same spot from a few weeks ago so I head strait there. They again stoped before I get there...damn. This time they are even more excited and are spliting thier time between the same tree from a few weeks ago and another tree thats laying down partway and also has a big hole in it. Well I again poke every hole I can see hoping to stir something up, nothing. This was early moring so I have lots of time today and the dogs are realy working and excited so I decide to step back a ways and watch them.

I back off the trees and up the hill abit and sit on a nice rock to watch the show. The dogs keep going back to that one tree so I keep looking up there trying to see something, no leaves on the tree this time of year so unless its inside that hole its not there. Then I notice a big horizontal branch that must be 50' long and it passes by a 100' tall pine. There is only a 3-4 foot gap and thats np for a bobcat so I start looking up the pine and there it is! Makes me wander if he was not up the same tree a few weeks ago and I just could not see him in the fading light.

Might not be the same cat but due to its size and the race ending in the same spot I think its a good bet its the same. He was realy long and tall for his weight only 22 lbs didn't think he was going to fit on the strecher, only had an inch of strecher left lol.

Another pretty cat
