Hound horns?

Post by waylon »

Where can i buy a good quality hound horn, and how do you guys get your dogs to come into to them? I though about blowing it every time before i feed, thats when i give a good holler and later when we are in the woods they come to that same holler

teach the dog to come to you in the yard, then blow the horn and immediately call him in. Pet him up or give him a little treat. Blowing at feeding is also good. When the dog knows to come to the horn, you may need a long range shock collar to teach him that you can reach him anywhere he can hear you.
I will make you one for a few bucks if you send me a horn to work with. A 14-16" horn, no larger than a coffe cup in diamiter makes a good horn. I can't do any ingraving, just a basic horn.

My hunting horn is probably my best accessory. I would miss it more than all the electronic crap we use these days. You will really appreciate one once you get used to it, and once your dogs get used to it.
If it has a nice fine tone to it, it will ring up those canyons so much better than your voice or a auto horn. Especially on a cold clear night, it really bounces through the canyons.
I don't feel like a idiot blowing my horn for the dogs. The few times, years ago, when I sat in the woods blowing an auto horn I felt like a fool, and whenever I hear someone else doing it I shake my head in disgust.
For some reason I don't mind blowing my horn when in the proximity of camps or ranch houses. Hollaring with my voice or blowing the car horn is much more likely to get everyone around all stirred up. It doesn't seem like anyone really associates the horn with anything out of the ordinary, or they just don't know what it is. Maybe they stay inside shaking with fear.
I can't hollar with my voice for very long without my voice giving out, but I can blow that horn with no problem.
I like to think the horn is distinct, few use them, and fewer have one with the same tone as mine; so maybe my dogs won't hit the road for whichever yahoo happens to be blasting their car horn all night.

To get your dogs to come to the horn just blow it around them enough that they know it is you, just like you do with your voice. I blow mine a little extra when I am hunting young dogs or pups and they get off aways by themselves when I am roading, I might even call them in with it when roading just for the heck of it. If they have any sense they will pick up on it quickly, if not then it is one more reason to start looking for a new prospect.

I have always been good at blowingmy own horn as well          ....oh damn that hurt.

Really though good info there man it's awesome to hear a good sounding horn calling in hounds. There is somthing special in it, i used to have a brass one my grandpa used to call in his coyote hounds but some crankster broke in my truck and stole it along with some other special items he gave me.
Would like to find here in the US like finney clay has in one of those pics on here of him, i think they call it a pocket horn. see them on e-bay but there all in the Uk

Yeah I got one of those horns to except it has a 1978 f-250 highboy on the end of it and folks just dont seem to care to hear it at 3am, espically since i hunt alot of times about 1 mile from Conners Correctional Facility on the creeks and draws outside of town, Those prison gaurds patroling the area are kinda jerks about it, But i sure do like to set there track dogs off with my hounds, I think of it as my part to help change those poor souls locked up in there through sleep depravation rehabilitation via some all night hound music       :D

did you blow any kind of horn in school? you just don't go whew in a hollw horn.

Waylon you need the boot that covers the horn, thought you were a cowboy haven't you ever seen a steer knock the boot off his horn[that is solid] boot is hollow. I for got Okies should just use a whistle.[kiss] keep it simple Sir.

Man that hurt on many levels frog, yeah i tried to play trombone but after about 3weeks they asked me to quit cause i was messing up the other kids, yeah i know about cow's a wee bit  Maybe after cab sends me those horns if i ever get him the horns to work with i will try and make me one, tandy leather in tulsa has a bunch of hollow one's for like 15 bucks or something. I'll try an Cowboy up and get it together :) Up until latley havent had any dogs that would get far enough away to need one really but trying to catch a few bobcats and coon while i look so dogs are getting further out,

Hey by the way, Frog i treed a coon last night with a year old pup and my 2 year old clifford dog that was a monster, biggest coon i have ever seen in person in my life, tried to get him to squall out of his den to get a better look at him but he just look up at me from inside that tree and growled like he ment it so we left him and went on, plus i think he could have whooped oth my dogs anyway! But this year old pup ran it like she was an old broke dog even picked up a loss by herself once mad i was proud as any one could ever be, it was her first time ever in the woods and she has never even seen a caged coon before, think i will make up some big story about how she comes from some " dry ground lion hounds " and is super line bred and sell all the pups i can out of her and get rich$$$   Naw not really but she is gonna be a fireball if i dont mess her up! so wish me luck

I was just kidding you,Mike Leonard uses a whistle I have one on each of my boats,

I bought a buffalo horn from Cronk off predators, black and gray polished [coyote] has a mouthpiece in the end and I can sound just like a old male coyote.I payed him 75 dollars. and I have different reeds for it.I don't know how you can get that boot off of that horn ask taxidermist or a butcher guy.
