Bobcat Measuring/Scoring?
I always wondered why bobcat skulls arent measured or scored? I have one that someone found Im looking at now, seems pretty big, measures 6 1/4". Not sure if thats big or not, but why doesnt Boone and Crockett measure them or Pope and Young, or do they and am I just missing it somewhere? If anyone gots any info that would be great! Thanks.
Re: Bobcat Measuring/Scoring?
I'm guessing they don't do it because cats are small game furbearer. Not really a big game animal. You'd probably have about 10,000 people all tied at #1 with the same size skull.
It's a good enough accomplishment to catch one, no real need to have some sort of measuring stick. The only way I ever seen it done is by weight and that can all depend on what the cat just got done eating.

Re: Bobcat Measuring/Scoring?
Guess that makes sense, just never really got an answer before on why they wouldnt count as big game. I mean theres got to be a couple of skulls out there that have some big pumpkin heads on them, and by big I mean for bobcats, haha. Thanks Nolte. That all makes a lot of sense.

Safari Club recognizes bobcats. And they measure the skulls.

I love the Safari Club they recognize a truely spectacular species and yes they are big game. Crawl up in a tree with a pissed off tom bobcat and tell him he is not big game. LOL!
I have crawled up a lot of trees with cougars and done some pretty stupid things with them in my days but I am ultra catious with bobcats. Maybe this comes from my early education with them as a junior trapper. I got lucky enough to snag a big tom in a crude set but when he hid behind the base of a cottonwood and I snuck in to see what I had and he came around that tree trying to eat me it scared the milk duds right out of me. Hell yes they are big game! If lions were as mean as bobcats they would kill everybody old enough to die.!

Re: Bobcat Measuring/Scoring?
mike: I will not call it a bobcat attack but about 30 plus years ago The las day of deer season I shot a average 8 point buck about 100 yards from camp . Gutted the deer and dragged him back to camp. Cleand up ate lunch hung the deer. we were not leaving till noon the next day ,so I decided to go back ,sit on a bucket and watch the gut kit to see if maybe a coyote would come to it. I had but the bucket up against a fir tree on the edge of a bog.Well I 'm smoking a butt ,just enjoying the outdoors the next thing I know a bobber jumps out of the tree, knocks my hat off , lands on my boots and starts hissing at me. I honestly never KNEW he was in the tree.Maybe I SMOKED him out
We looked at each other for maybe 5 seconds and he began to run. stupidly I took a shot . I will call it LUCK as opposed to my SHAKING skills but I connected. Certainly would like to know what it was thinking during the stare-down.
PS : while bobcat hunting I do NOT reccomend using a 30-06 with 220 grain shells
