One problem with them is that they don't always shock when they are supposed to. For example, when your dog goes to drink, if he rubs the bucket with the shocker, it usually goes off and shocks the dog for drinking. The vibration of the shocker rubbing on things can make them go off. Personnally, I don't like them but sometimes you may have to use them.
A better option might be to get a regular Ecollar on your dog and have someone stay back at your house after you leave. When he barks, he can be giving some correction. When using an Ecollar, never let the dog know it was you (or someone else) giving him the correction. In other words don't yell at him when also using the collar. Let him think it was the bark that shocked him. Same goes for when you are using them to correct trash running. If the dog learns that it is you giving him the correction, they learn to only be good when you are around.

If you use a better collar that works only on sound and vibration level. Wont be a problem with unwanted shocks. No problem with ruining a dog with one either. They know the difference between the yard and the woods.

John Wick has written some EXCELLENT advise on this subject. I know he wrote one last year on the "Walk with Wick" section of American Cooner, I'm sure you can find it online....Actually, here is alink to that article.

John seems to have a good handle on the problem and I'd follow his advice.

I had the same question with my dogs. I never used a bark collar though. Just the tritronics activated by me. It really didnt take long at all to teach them barking in the yard aint right. Just a few days really if that. I yelled at them and then lit em up but i also looked for plenty of opportunities to correct them when they didnt know i was around. And to answer the main question.... they definitely know the difference between hunting and the yard. That wont be any problem.
Get er done!

Re: barking collers can i us them with out ruining a dog
Ive got one who is thick headed and likes to bark at other animals and people around the house. Granted, I live in the middle of now where, but its still annoying to listen to a dog bark, at the neighbors dog he sees everyday, and the people everyday.
I got the Tri-Tronics Bark Limiter and it works GREAT. Few days with that on, and he didn't want to bark at anything anymore while at home. Every once in a while I have to put it back on to remind him at home, you shut up or else..and then we're good for a month or so. Some will catch on and once you tell them to shut up they'll stop and you wont have any problems.
Like The Vise said .....Dogs know the difference between hunting time and home time.
