caged cat for my pup

i have two walker pups i need started on bobcats and no1 here hunts cats so what should i do..cage trap a cat?..no drags please..they can do that but need a cat to tree...they are 9 months old and tear coons up..can they do it and would a rabbit work for bait?

well i'd say if those pups can tear a grown coon up they should at least be able to tree a bobcat once in awhile if you give em a chance huntin

You might want to be a little carfull what you you do with a caged cat. Thats a good way to spend time dealing with people that dont agree with hound hunting in general. We are just about shut down as it is. And if you can, take a varmint that climbs and turn it loose in the middle of a field buy its self and give it a chance, let that thing get a hundred yards or so fire that pup after it and when that pup sees it climb up that tree he might figure out what happens when that sent leaves the dirt.let him bark on his own with a little encouragement tie him back and shoot it out when he showes he wants it bad turn him in good luck

iv seen videos with dogs being trained with caged coons would a cat be kinda the same except let it go and turn the dogs on its track?if i did this would the cat run far? they aint the best hounds the cat would probably get away plus these trees are short so it will probably jump...is this illegal? if so why can other people use the same methods in videos on the internet all the time?

Buster, If your dogs are 9 months old they should be done with the puppy games. Especially if they are your only dogs. They should be getting their opertunity on the game you want them to catch. There is no substitute for the real deal. If you don't want to put them on the real thing or haveing trouble with it then do a drag and put something in the tree with the sent on it. They should tree on scent not by sight.

I know a guy that would put a large bow in the tree or a large stuffed animal when training pups. At nine months old his dogs were getting it done on a regular basis.

they can tree a coon but i havent tried a bobcat thats what im trying to say...you said your friends dogs were gettn it done on a regular basis..does this mean u havent trained one you only buy started dogs and that if ou did train some they werent gettn it done on a regular basis?just wondering what your gettn to here..

I just used him as an example to say it can be done with regularity. As well as a lot of people will tell you that is too much to expect from a dog of that age. I have trained or raised more dogs then I have bought started. I think i have bought one started dog and she lasted about six months. Some of them were on fire at 9 months and others were on their way. Some were not doing what I expected of them and they were sent down the road.

In essence I am also saying that you shouldn't use a cat in a cage for your dogs, for many reasons. Legal and other.
