so.tx. cathunt 1-31-10

Buenos dias,It is raining in so. tx. again.suppose to all week.we had a nice hunt down in kingsville yesterday. We turned the hounds loose about 4pm.I forgot to mention, when we arrived at the gate, there was a cat sitting on his butt just inside the gate.It sure was hard not to tailgate him.Traffic was bad and it would have been a death sentance for the pack if he would have crossed the road.He recieved a free pass this day. We drove about 2 miles in, and put the dogs down. Was not long before they struck.I was soaking up the trailing music, when mr. bob crossed the road 200 yards down.Only problem was the pack turned, jumped, and went the other way.We followed the pack as they heated mr. bob up.She stayed ahead of the hounds for about 35 mins then took to a big hackberry tree. One of the men on the hunt was looking for a large tom to mount to put in his office. This cat was a young cat and after some praising of the pack,we went on looking for #2.The reson we did not go back and run the one we saw cross the road, was we though it was most likly a littermate to the one we treed.Again we were looking for a big tom. As you can imagine,no shortage of bobs down here in so. tx.They just dont run as long as they do in the s. east. With the exeption of a good whitebrush thicket or a real thick blackbrush hill,it is a lot denser in the s. east. It was not long before we had found #2.No trailing here,it was a roar from the first bark.20 mins later, the pack bayed in a pear thicket and within 4 or 5 mins streched mr. bob.A bigger cat, probably 20-22lbs.Not quite mr.macho like we were looking for but a success anyway. 8 o-clock guess what? more rain... loaded up to drive 1.5 hours n. back home.We will go back when the weather straitens out. Shout out to Cary and mr. Finny.Hope all is well .As for the 2 lemon spotted gyps, one just finnished her cycle and the other is coming in.Charlie doing well, but is learning what pear is.He looks like a pen cushion.Ha-Ha.Hopfully he will take Peppy's place. All other hounds are fine only developing webbed feet. Ha-Ha. Good luck and happy hunting, Mike

Hey Mike, CJC& Mr Clay told me you were on here. Hope you remember me. You and Mr Finney came down to Fl several years ago and we hunted together. Seems like we had dry weather and didnt get much done, if I remember correctly. It sounds like you are having plenty of rain and running. If you get this way come see us. John

Hello Mike,
Mike Rooke I believe? Don't believe I've ever met you but have heard the name. Welcome to the sight. Glad to see someone representing the south TX guys. You'll have to start carrying a camera to add some pics to the story. I've been trying to get to Freer for a couple of weeks now but first spike season (which is ridiculous) and now rain. As soon as it dries up I'm gonna hit 'em. It's real wet here too and supposed to rain more this week. I'll be shut down at least another week, may have to make a trip to west TX to run.
Welcome to the site,

Thanks for the compliments Mr. Clay.

Mr. Mike,
I live in the big community of Lone Camp, about an hour west of Fort Worth. If I didn't work in Ft Worth I'd move to better cat country but I'm pretty much fixed. We have enough cats but they run pretty hard and most places are small. Those two things combined can cause problems. I'm still able to get some hunting in though.
Take care,
Derek

sotxcatdogs or DerekE,

Hey either one of you have a suggestion as to what ranch might let me come on and do some bobcat chasin? I am down in Laredo and want to get my dogs out. Willing to do some driving.

You can PM me if you prefer

Thanks
