another garmin thread

Post by The Vise »

I have read alot of feedback on here concerning the Astro 220. Seems all if it is really concerning the range. Range is great for me but the batteries dont last as long as i hoped. In 5 second update mode mine lasted like 12 hours or so and in 30 it lasted maybe 20. I dont know for sure cuz it died in the middle of the night but the way it was looking i would say 20 hours. Feed back?

Anyone? Does anyone actually have a unit running for 30 hours like it is listed to when updating at 30 seconds? I think they need to get rid of the dang lights on the thing. Thats gotta take some juice. Maybe not much though... what do i know.....

Vise,

I just really haven't used my Garmin but once in the field, and therefore have no real knowledge of battery life on the thirty second signal. But what I did was set them in the garage and they lasted 32 to 33 hours. The temperature in my garage stays pretty steady at around thirty-five or six degrees all winter long. I set them out one morning around 8:00 AM and then watched the lights go out between 5:00 and 6:00 PM if I remember correctly..........

I power mine off the cig lighter,or the 12volt port in the dashboard when Im not actually on foot, saves the batteries for hiking in time, not a special garmin item, just your basic cell phone cord, hooks right to to back of the unit and will power it as long as you want,It will power down and shut off if you turn the vehicle off,If you are trying to listen out the window simply put the key in accy mode and it will power it until your car batt poops out,Easily found at walmart, radio shack, ect, found a real nice one LCK pointed out to me at a walkers truck stop, had a nice curly cable on it,but it didnt stretch all the way down the hill still plugged in

Last year I had my dogs out over night and the DC20's were set on 5 second intervols and they lasted from 7AM till 5AM the next morning. I reset them to 10 second intervols and now they will run for upwards of 26 hours or more. They seem to get shorter life as the batteries age though. Just to add a little about the range, I watched them all night on the Garmin and they were at 5.9 miles from me. Granted it was line of site off the mountain to my house! It was a 10 hour hike to where they were "treed" at and once I got there, they were on their way down the mountain in a different drainage. That was a loooooong day.

You can go into the settings and lower the frequency of your collars (154 Mhz- 151 Mhz) this might help your battery life a little ( lower feq = less power).
