About thursday Night I realiazed it was a 3 day weekend, So we kind did a Spur of the moment trip down to visit and hunt with our friends down south.
Saturday, we ended up with one fairly early in the day, it was a short race, Dogs really really put the heat on it. We figure it must have ducked into a bush or something because we were waiting for the locate when the Race turned back on heading right back down it's back track.. (Surprizingly none of the dogs hung a tree or anything on that trick.) Race came right to us and we were expecting to watch it cross the road, however the cat figured it better find high Ground pretty quick. That was the best race that our two packs dogs have ever worked together on. Smaller Female, we got some photo's hung out and enjoyed the tree with the dogs and hunted hard until dark to get a second cat going, but two cat days weren't in the cards for us this weekend. Valentines day, we all loaded up and about noon, 1pm we finally got a strike in the Rain, Dog took off, I figured it was a bigger cat with a longer tail, and was kinda expecting a Shorter race the way the dogs were screaming on it. I have to say I was nervous the entire time, that this wasn't a bobcat, and I knew it wasn't a cougar Very quickly. Race went down and looped back up on the Road, we were lucky enough to be in a spot we could watch the dogs hit the road, and without hessitation, Full speed run down the road out of hearing... (I reached for the Shocker thinking.. This isn't good, I don't know why I didn't start mashing buttons but I didn't) If it was a cat the dogs should have caught up to him on the road as fast as they were moving. We run down to the point and you can tell the dogs went off the road as fast as the could, Sounded like a split race down there. With echo's and dogs all over. I was getting more and more nervous each step of this race still holding the tri tronics trying to think of what to do. (In hind sight we figure either there was two tracks going, or that cat was really putting some tricks and turns in there and it must have been like a Train of dogs depending on speed..either way we were holding our breath trying to figure out what was going on.. I wish I would have looked back at the garmin to see what really happened there but it was back at the truck 1/2 mile away?)
1by1 the dogs started lining out again, and crossed a Creek that, It was this creek that dropped some of the slower dogs out of the race, I could tell by the garmin that My Male almost wanted to start Treeing here which I quickly corrected..
Well the three dogs that made it through were really working this cat out of the country and just about out of hearing. According to the garmin, Each one leading the race and finding the loose, at one point or another, really neat to watch them all work hard together, and take turns leading. Hour and a half later we found a way into the Creek they were in. I was still thinking it was a Bay job rather then a Tree, Because I just didn't think it was a cat. After wading across a river, and Crawling up a steep brushy, rocky hillside, I was pleasant to see a wet cat in the tree. It was a Good race and I was pretty pround of my little female for staying in on this one to the end. to Brushy to get any Camera shots at the Tree. I asked don to take this Cat for maddie (I didn't want to skin it, and didn't have any need for the hide, I'll let don do that work!
But here was our valentines Day cat. Monday, we were supposed to hunt until Noon, and start heading home, Which we did and didn't get a cat race going, So we ate lunch up on the mountain before we decided to head out, Well 12:45 we were just walking around enjoying the sun, Don took his dogs on a little walk around the washed out road. I think Laura had just said, I think it's time for us to start heading out, when we hear Penny Open on the other side... After a few Choice words, I put the collars back on Maddie and sent her down the road to them. Don's dogs had already worked the cat 100-200 yards off the road and I could hear maddie opening up on the road, Apparently she passed the track, Spun around and Found it and Yapped all they way down it like she was the first dog on it.. I thought for sure that would blow up the loose the others were working on down below. I held my breathe and watched the garmin until she made it to the other dogs,
We figure there was a kill in there somewhere, Because once they got that area figured out, it was a Jumped race from that point, there was section that the cat ran the road, Penny Figured it out and after that, The cat was loosing ground quick. I tried to get my Male in on it, a couple times but the race was just moving too fast, I found a spot that I could but 30 seconds after he started in towards them, I heard the locate and Tree.. (I probably just helped reenforce my tree problems with him, and Had I known it then, I wouldn't have turned him into it.)
Anyways, About 1/2 hour into the tree, we noticed a couple other dogs show up. Don knew him, Dane showed up 20 minutes later, apparently his dogs came in from another unit to join the fun.. We left this cat also. Here is a photo of Maddie and Dink on the First cat. Anyways, I figured I post a little story this time since I haven't been active on here for a few weeks.
