what does good mean to you????

hey everyone i was wondering what good mean to you when you are talkeing about roading your dog and how they do on the rig. cuz, would this be considered good. when i go road my hound, he knows, and goes behind the truck and waits for me. also when i put him on the strike rack. he hops up with just me pointing at it. he doesnt freakout when he up there he just stands. there calmly, until he strikes. would you all consider that good. and is there anything else i should work with him on??? thanks

yep. thats how he does it. but i road him for exersice only.

I think that's fine. A dog should do what the handler asks of it. I prefer to exercise and road hunt my dogs in front of the truck so I can see what they're doing and thinking.

yeh i know. but i can see him pretty good most of time time cuz he is usualy right next to the tailgate.

If behind the pickup works for you then do it, sound like you have a great handle on your dog. I won't let mine do that because I am afraid I would run one over, I know it can happen, so they stay in front.

I agree about the chance of running over your dog, but also behind your truck he gets dust and exhaust fumes that hamper his strike ability. I would try and work him with another dog that runs ahead of the truck to get him to do it also.

yeh i would get him to run in front of the truck. but where i road my dog at its really windy. and if he ever didnt want to liten while he was in front of me it would be real hard to catch him. cuz the roads can barley fit a pickup. on them. also its njot like hes right next to the exhausts sucking it in. he stays to the side of the pickup or a little behinde it.

Well all this works fine for exercise. I road mine, I got one that will road behind my truck, he got a lil tire rash one day runing beside my truck, now he stays back. The other 4 road out front, but hounds are short, my pup is recovering from becoming a bump in the road when she stopped to pick cactus from her paw and I didn't see her stop. Well the only good thing is I was only going a couple miles per hour and only broke her leg, it could have been much worse. It really comes down to what you like to do. Don't think I know it all, I am just starting out. I am still learning myself. But when you exercise, I try to keep my dogs on the same road(s) so they get used to the game. They know where the waters are, they know which way I am going to turn, and they keep the pace where I like it. When they start being dogs and checking scent posts, I just pass them, give it a lil gas and they all kick it up a notch. It keeps their confirmation up and they can all make a long race. good luck. I have a dog that will also load and rig up with out much trouble. He seems to know what is going on just by my actions/body language.

As far as roading the dogs, either for excercise, or hunting, I make them road in front.

About a year ago, I was excercising the dogs. I let them all out. I then tried to get ahead of them. I would wait for them to get out to the side of the road and then get ahead of them. Well this time, a 10 month old or so walker pup decided she wanted to be on the other side of the truck. She darted in between my passenger front and rear tires, and my left rear tire caught her right over the neck. Killed her instantly. That was a hard day, because she was really starting to turn it on.

Now, I make sure all of the dogs are out in front where I can see them. If I can't see them, I stop. I have even gotten out to make sure of where they are at.

The dogs don't get the steady speed of running anymore, so I just road them longer like that.
