starting a pup
i've got a new pup that will be ready to start in a couple of months, gonna try to build a cat pack. question is do I start him on cats or start him on coons with my coondogs and then switch him over? I know alot of bear hunters that start on coon and switch em over-will this work for a catdog too?

A man is not very smart that can,t find his wife 2 jobs.
And any wife should be able to support her man and a pack of hounds.

Re: starting a pup
If u are going to run cats only
Never let your dog see a coon or run a coon.
They are hell to break off coon if u ever let they start running them.

JMO don't waste your time with drags, cage critters, treeing training. If you want a bobcat dog, just hunt'em on bobs, start behind them or borrow a sold broke catdog. If you never put'em on coon and stay straight cat, they won't even look sideways at them.If they do remember what my teacher told me over and over again TRASH IS TRASH.Tone and shock off everything else{after they've seen enough of the right game, bobcat dogs usually can't be pre broke like a beardog].Good luck and good huntin,I do have to ask though-what breed are we choosing for this catdog???

Re: starting a pup
he's a grade treeing walker-from a cross I made. his mother is probally one of the best coondogs I've ever owned that came from bear stock, his father is also a bear dog. thought about trying a running walker as well, they are plentiful in these parts but most are deer dogs. I understand putting em on just bobs, we've had more snow this year than we've had in 20 years-most years we're lucky if we get 6inches a winter. with no now and no broke dog how do I find them to start the pup on? I've never heard of a cat hunter around here
Damn I wish I lived out west

Dads Dog boy, I appreciate the compliments, but I keep telling you I'm a lowly fox hunter, who might just happens across a cat, not enough in my area to warrent keeping a Cat Dog. I believe some one would have to go to South East Va if they wanted to keep dogs just to run on cats in this state. W ehave had snow on the ground for about 1 month and a half now except for about 4 days, and I havent found but 3 -4 places with a cat track where I can hunt.
