Tracks Describe the Animal...
Re: Tracks Describe the Animal...
yep, just what I thought all along. These are tracks of a bigfoot wearing one of those bobcat track strap ons. Notice how it is a double track with drag marks? see, pretty obvious.
Clarka, I was not laughing at all about what happened to you with the otter. Beleive me, it is not stupid at all. It was an inside joke between me and Norwester, and I should have said so. If you notice i mentioned a freind and an otter in my earlier post...

Re: Tracks Describe the Animal...
I think this is one of the best threads ever. I can't remember one that was as entertaining and fun as this one. We got some of the more succesful bobcat hunters in the nation on here scratching their heads. And we got a lot more that are looking at this and taking the 5th amendment. They aint takin any chances
We got some on one side sure it is a bobcat. And some on the other side possitive it is not a bobcat. Then we got B n Trees, who has probably been doing this for 30 years for all we know, and who cant beleive he even posted this with so many of us loosers out here to question his ability to identify a bobcat track.
I think it is hilarious and beautiful all at the same time. I dont know a better thread for a beginner to stumble on. There is actually a wealth of knowledge to be gleaned from all the things everyone has said. What I love most about it is the large number of people willing to expose themselves and throw something out knowing they could eventually be proven wrong. I love it when people are willing to be wrong about something. Being right all the time is a tremendous heavy load that no one should have to carry alone. ONe thing is for sure in this thread: some of us are wrong. I love it.
One other thing I know for sure: BnTrees, if you got a dog that can catch a bobcat in those bluffs, all I gotta say is she must have wings. It is beautiful country and I envy you that much. But if I saw a bobcat track heading into that stuff, I would just keep on driving till I saw one that wasn't. You are a better man than me, with better dogs than I ever had if you are catching cats in that stuff.
I am thinking on the new close up B n Trees got a rare shot of a front foot print. (of a bobcat
). It looks strange because we are always used to seeing the back foot print. The back one usually lands right on top of the front so all you ever see is the back. I am guessing the indistinct track in front of the clear track would be the back foot, and it did not land on top of the front as usual.
What is your opinion? Comon, chicken, take a risk

Re: Tracks Describe the Animal...
Well David you pretty much put the punctuation on this thread. I guess this kind of discussion shows who is really out there seeing tracks and who is living vicariously through this forum. One thing is for sure I have taken some good notes on who not to buy a "bobcat dog" from. I don't catch a lot of bobcats because some of this country out here is wicked rough with deep canyons and big rock piles but if the track is good (and trust me I know what a western bobcat track looks like) I sure as heck will give it a go. I can run a mountain lion a whole lot better than these little cats. The more time we spend behind our dogs the more we will see unusual things and things that don't fallow the rules. Every animal is different with its own physical traits, personality and behavior habits. It is tough to generalize something when there are so many variables. And at these times it takes experience and knowledge make sense of the not so typical situations.

That isn't a bob that is a dam skunk.
Re: Tracks Describe the Animal...
I dont know how any one could argue thats not a cat track. Especially after the updated pictures. BN Trees when you get that list done would you forward me a copy? Lol. I caught a big tom lion this year with a similar type of track. His toes were REALLY spread out, so much so at times I would look at them and wonder what in the hell we were after, he also drug his toes all the time and in very little snow. But the dogs were long gone by then and when I got to them they had a lion alright. His ankles seemed almost slightly deformed and almost swollen like. Some tracks looked quite normal and in other spots they were really weird. Maybe like he had some form of arthritis? His toes did seem very normal in every way but something wasnt right in his ankles. Maybe thats whats going on here? At any rate, i would be very willing to bet anyone theres a Bobcat standing at the end of those tracks!
The fascination of hunting cougar with hounds lies in the discovery and unravelling of a complicated trail, watching an honest hound strike out on a track that has been found and read, and finally bringing the animal to bay so that you can see it for yourself---Jerry A. Lewis

Re: Tracks Describe the Animal...
I've seen a couple cats walk like that on thin crust under a couple inches of powder, I think they spread their toes
to help falling threw the crust or when digging in because they have a hound putting pressure on em
.
My running buddy (Mike) mentioned that we were running across several cats this year dragging their feet, and getting
a lot of cats walking the roads, sometimes close to a mile, instead of the straight across the road thing.

Re: Tracks Describe the Animal...
So with all the help I got with the last few pictures I posted I thought maybe I could get someone to tell me about these tracks I found yesterday. I know they are not bobcat tracks and my lion hounds trailed them just like there was a lion at the end of them. But notice the second picture how the animal left quite the drag mark going through the snow.... Wonder if it was a porcupine or a fisher... maybe badger... or wolverine... or quite possibly a mountain lion???

I would say thats a lion only dragging it's butt on the ground because it's got worms

B N Trees, I Applaud you. You've got a lot more patience than me. To ask a simple question, and then have your own intelligence questioned for a week, I'm afraid that I would take it too personal. Having said this, can I throw some fuel on this hillarious fire? Those last set of tracks definately look YETTY!

Those cant be lion tracks, they are not big enough. Are you sure they are not bobber tracks?
