Bleeding Tail
I have an issue with one of my hounds. His tail is constantly being broke open on the tip due to him being very vigorous when he shakes. He whips everything with it and constantly has an open wound on it. How can I get this to heal up? I want to help him out and stop blood from getting all over the other dogs any suggestions?
Re: Bleeding Tail
Bag balm, vasaline, and i forget the others. I asked the same question when my mail was having that same problem. The above is what i used and it helped and it got better now i still smear some on the tip every once in a while to keep the tip from drying out and breaking open in the the box. Lance

Re: Bleeding Tail
Thanks. So you just rub the end of the tail with it and it keeps it moist? Its breaking open because its exsesivly dry?
Re: Bleeding Tail
that can be a real issue with some hounds if typical treatments don't work and it progresses it can lead to tail chewing caused by the pain a vet can dock a adults tail if required. this isn't as common as occasionally bleeding I just thought I'd point it out as something to watch for.

Re: Bleeding Tail
He doesnt chewon it, it just breaks open every now and then from getting way too excited and smacking it on things like the side of the box, his kennel, ect.
Re: Bleeding Tail
Same as my dog, look at the end and you should be able to tell if it's dry. Like the end of a finger it gets dry you hit it on some thing and it breaks open. Try to keep it moist and it will take care of it's self. Like pegleg said if he goes to chewing on it alot there could be a problem but as for docking I would say it's a last resort, not a fan of a hound looking like a cur squirle dog. If the dog is younger he will also calm down in time when he learns the game he is probly young and over anxios. Lance
Re: Bleeding Tail
try hauling him in a bigger box or on top till it heals or pad the box although it'll probably only give them something to tear up
Re: Bleeding Tail
Try Krazy Glue.It works on split ears too.As the tail gets healed up the Krazy Glue will come off.
