MARTY, OUT WEST FOR DEPREDATION THERE IS A TRAP CALLED THE ALDRICH CABLE SNARE. FOR BEAR / LION THEY ARE SET IN WHAT IS CALLED A CUBBY SET FASHION.YOU USE STICKS OR ROCKS TO MAKE THE ANIMAL STEP WHERE YOU WANT THE FOOT TO END UP. THE CABLE IS ATTACHED TO A SPRING LOADED SWING ARM, THEY THROW WITH VIOLENT SPEED. THE UP SIDE TO THIS IS YOU FIND THE GAME AT THE LOCATION YOU MAKE THE SET . UNLIKE A HOUND THAT GOES WERE THE TRACK TAKES THE HOUND. YOU CAN MAKE THE CABLE END WHERE IT WILL NOT CLOSE ON A HOUND BUT WILL HOLD A LION . I HAVE CAUGHT MANY PROBLEM BEAR WITH THESE . I BUILD ALL MY OWN HARDWARE SUCH AS CABLES, ONE WAY SLIDES ETC. I WOULD THINK A 1/8 INCH AIRCRAFT CABLE WOULD HOLD A LION AS I HAVE HELD BEAR WITH THAT BUT NOT FOR LONG. Tracker didnt mean to piss you off , dont be so touchy, im just saying for the safety of dogs and to preserve trapping you have to think before you set. As for a deer i didnt mean shoot one and hang it i meant a road kill. As for Snares im not sure about you guys but i use the snare locks because its a quick death, it pulls tight and doesnt back off, couple minits and they are taking a nap. You know more about mt.lions then me, i just know how to catch lynx, if you have a problem with me send me a PM dont clout the thread. thanks.

trapping a lion,with a foot hold trap is no big deal,you need a trap that will hold'em once,you catch them,location is everything,if they don't get exsposed to your set,you ain't going to catch them,go threws are great places to blind set,i've caught them in common bobcats sets alot,they are easy to neck snare,they are huggers up against the rims,notches in long rims.use you head, about people,there pets running loose,nosey bastards,you should be ok

Best invest in the heavy wire snares if you want too catch and keep them. I personally wouldn't advise trying too snare long tails. Am no trapper, but I have caught three lions with snares on them, In the last five years. The first had the snare worked so deep into it's neck that it could tilt it's head back and breath through his neck. Was walking dead not too far from starved too death. The second was A big female that had the snare around her chest. I suspect from very young as it had actually grown over and had caused her too split her sternum. The third was actually very loose. No hide damage but had spent some time chewing that cable off. Claw and tooth damage. All of these lions were caught with dogs. If you have A problem cat then try gettin some hounds over there. We do cats for the fish and wildlife in Alberta. Mostly yard dog and horse killing cats. But cats that chew out from snares have long slow deaths................. Do what you want just not around me...lol....

Use bobcat gland lure and a 4 coil # 3 montomery,4 or 5 foot good chain and a long stake and your problem is solved.They have got into my bobcat sets by accident here in North Dakota.The game and fish has one of them collared and is tracking it now.The dogs will work this fall once you get tracks to follow.

I second that, I accidentally trapped a Lion this winter (He Broke loose) but I was using bobcat gland and some beaver meat with some poly-fill as an attractant. It does not matter what kind of cat it is they are all like a house cat in some way!!

Make sure to reinforce your traps. OVER BUILD OVER BRACE

I am by no means a trapper, but when I was hunting with my boys in Argentina this last spring, They chase cougars with hounds and the way they do it because it is so hot, They get a kid goat and stake it out in the afternoon 1 or 2 hours ( where they believe the cat is traveling) before dark and come back the next morning with the dogs to run off a fresh kill on a cat that is full and the race usually doesnt last long.

3 snare wrapped long tails in 5 years ? Thats something....

What I want to know though is how does a guy go about getting a wicked nick name like the Black Rhino !? Obviously a guy cant self impose a call sign like that and have it stick so how did ya get it ?

I wouldn't be worried about a dog in the snare,I would be worried about the owner of the dog.Cuz if its a hound best belive somebody's going to be look looking!!!!!!!!

I have caught two lions with trailway bobcat sets. All I had for bait was a duck wing attractor hung on a limb. We got them free by using the hounds to bay them while we used two ten foot poles to put pressure on the long springs. I was very intense for a few minutes try to get them set free.
