I wish there were some way of finding out WHO these puppy breeders are and how to avoid them to begin with . Bigfoot you raise some very important points.

Bigfoot,

Very well said!

Beginers and Novices can learn a lot from this and should print it out and read it every time they are thinking of getting that new pup or Hound.

More expierenced Hunters would do well to remember the lessons they may have already learned.

That was the part that I too didn't agree with. Just cause somebody is a good marketer or advertiser, it dang sure doesn't mean you shouldn't buy a pup from them because they are puppy mills!!! Part of the reason they have been around and won so much is they have PROVEN records....and big flashy magazine ads!

I also am not someone who says "Don't get caught up in papers"...I also don't beleive that "more than half the papers out there are false"...Papers will give you a very good indicator of what type of ancestry your dogs have and how they hunted. Obviously doesn't guarantee anything however.

Amen Cobalt

There is no ambiguity in that statement.

Dang, forgot to mention Buzz Anderson.
Has any body else had any good experiences catching big game with 'PR' bred coonhounds? Maybe I've just been unreal lucky.

Well damn... I guess I am going to have to go tell my "PR" "coondog" bred female who consistanly puts up big game for me (she'll do it without help and rig it by herself) that she won't make a big game dog...

Some people advertise because they don't want to sell locally.. Why put more competition in your own woods.. Or why not get your pups out to other states/hunting conditions to make sure they can hack it wherever they go..

There are people out there who may not have been in the game as long as some of the above mentioned people who are researching what they do, putting their dogs in the woods and trying to get pups in the right hands.. You have to start somewhere...

I agree that you need to be careful when you buy...

I don't think most papers are false...

I think you would agree Bigfoot, that a guy needs to exercise caution when buying inbred hounds with minimal outcrosses. That kind of breeding can be a recipe for disaster if not done by a highly experienced breeder with an understanding of genetics.Lots of mental and physical abnormalities can raise there ugly head and sometimes it takes a trained eye to recognize it and correct the problem. In my opinion it is best to maintain as much genetic diversity as possible while consistently maintaining desired traits.

Cobalt,I owned a dog not long ago the came from Kim Russell that you mentioned above. He came to Idaho as a hard core"PR" coondog and it wasn't long before he was a hardcore bear dog.
