I don't know on dogs but I know on horses a colt picks up alot of habits from the mare while he/she is still on her. I also know that in cattle the best calves you get when you first cross two breeds are the first two seasons no matter the age. Maybe it is like hay meadows after so many years of growing alfalfa you need to go in and either spray out the old crop and plant new or rotate your crop then go back in with alfalfa.
The thing about it I have seen alot of good stock dogs come from an accident breeding, now that it is done cross your fingures and hope for the best.

Re: How important is the female in breedings
Thanks dads dog boy, mike and each one that shared there wisdom and opinions. I love to hear each one of them, from years of trial and error, to share with all of us. I agree with mr. clay, breed them young, for his reasons,. My opinion is this, if you hunt, know dogs, by two, or younger, you know is its average or special, and worthy of breeding, knowing the history of the line already.
I slept on this, before my response, like mike said, a man has the eye for it. I feel I do for bear dogs. I have trained, owned and sold a lot of good ones. To me, its a no brainer, I can breed another good litter of bear dogs. Maybe I have a double challenge, I hunt and train for bear all summer, and fall, and play with bobcats in winter. I strive to have use and own the same dog for both. As the clay family breed for bobcat, I believe, mike for lion, are they specialized breeding, for that animal. I love both animals to hunt, and I dont want two packs. I'm sure the list of criteria for either game, and dog, would fill this page. I want a bear dog, not a dog that runs bear. Same with a bobcat dog. HUMMM, what is your thoughts? Have i decreased my available genetic pools to choose from????

Re: How important is the female in breedings
i have seen females that "thro good pups" in that case , i think she is more important-
i guess they are " prepotent-" males can be prepotent too.
one good reason to breed younger dogs , if it works , you can do it again-

I always like Pete's posts. He usually throws in a little humor, is full of good common sense and, unlike me and some others, he does not try to "out think" himself.
Keep it up Pete.

i got a litter on accident out of two bread eaters but had decent bloodlines on top and bottom so i kept the one male and its the best hound i own.
