For some things yeah.. I can staple (have stiched up before) super glue, have meds on hand.. Do my own worming etc.. For serious stuff they go to the vet...

I know my dogs and their actions well enough to know if it is something I can handle or not.. I don't mess around if I can't...

At times it's best to be your own vet when possible, or be real carefull who you use when you require one, it can get costly and cause a very undesierable problem....
I used a vet for 30 yrs for my hounds,he was good...expensive and did not always get it right but I was satisfied .
Now his daughter has takin over the business ....fresh out of vet school.
I had purchased two Cameron hounds that I was to take to Africa for our leopard hunts there.
I gave this young vet all the info on dates that I would be departing the country and she went ahead and told me to bring the pups in for blood work etc.
To make a long ,,,,long story short, I call the pet moving company to make arrangements to book the tickets for the hounds, only to find out the blood work had expired!!!!
This young vet did not read the documents correct and took the blood work to early according to regulation...
I call this vet, she tells me to bring the hounds back and they would redo the blood work, I tell her the pet company I am using advised me it's to late that the hounds can not go at the same time I am leaving....
NO ... she said.... I will expedite the blood work or TRY to get an extention on the blood work that has already been done that's all I can do????...key word TRY..
So, I take the pups back in and she "the vet" almost kills the little female as she ruptured the juglar trying to draw blood....
Well ..they got the results back the second time.... the day I fly to Africa which I told her 14 days earlier was not going to work as we were out of time...
Here's the catch...they tell me I did not do all the things I needed in order to take the hounds to Africa...I needed to have the tickets bought in advance...whats that got to do with them doing the blood work on time????
End result..Pincher Creek Vet Clinic... bills me $1.390.00 for the service thay they screwed up in providing from inexperience and not following regulations not to mention the damage to the pup!!!!!
Then they tell me in writing I was not happy with their care provided to my pets and therefor no longer will provide service to me as I was not paying the bill ....when they were the ones that screwed up!!!
This same vet clinic gave me meds for years for ear mites on a couple of my hounds, a few $1.000 later, I have a vet that's a client...it's not ear mites...it's ear canker!!!!
A $15.00 bottle of Whites Ear Canker remody and the hounds are cured...
ASK QUESTIONS about everything,, if you do not and they are INEXPERIENCED in their service ability it will cost you in more ways than one!!!

yeah smalltown u can do your own shots,wormer,wounds,heartguard ext. and save alot of money plus it would be a good learning experience 4 u and family its more about work than money theres always a way.

My dad was to a certain point.

Him and I sowed our dog's throat back together after he got into some Javalinas. Dog never went to the vet, was fine the next day.

Get a vet that lives in a small town, that knows what they are doing, that isn't an anti hunter, who will help you learn how to fix dogs up... Move to Norwood Colorado and take them to see Mark up there. Best Vet in the world, knows his stuff, and besides that is one hell of a man who will go out of his way to help people.

I do most myself, except rabies,I cant sew a button on, but I sure can dogs Staple etc. I never had much luck with glue, usually to big of cut, and if its small enough for glue, I leave it open to heal and drain. Spent lots over the years, on these bear dogs, and learned a lot from the vets also. If its chest, or stomach, off to the vet we go, stomach is the worst, if it get in there, these vets, open them up, and inspect all the intestines, for puncture. One punture in the intestines, will infect and kill them. Helped my vet on a sunday do that also. Heck, maybe I should be for hire If you know your dogs, you usually will see the signs or symptoms, and get them fixed up. LOL
