Making pups think about it.

I was wondering if anyone thinks letting a pup sit by its self for a period of time to think about the last run,training session is benificial.

I don't think so... I think repetition and getting out as much as possible is the best.

Even when people let older dogs sit for a while they get so much energy and iggnorance in them that the first time you take them out you have to get out and make sure you took your hunting truck and not the short bus out lol.

I think waiting to long can harm a pup more then getting it out there and learning. Dogs even learn things that are important when you rode them, everything is a learning possibility for dogs... And people.

I guess is what I was saying is when you get home with a pup you put them by them selves for a while to think then put them back in with the pack. Just to allow them some alone time to think about that day. not to leave them in a a kennel and not use them. I guess this is more of a question for the guys who let all their dogs out together in a big lot.

I do not no what the benefit of this would be. If a pup does well on an outing bring it home and do just as you do everyday with the pup alone time to me has no factor on how the pup will work the next time out just keep exposing to everyday enviroment and hunting. later, Andy

For sure, this always applies no matter if you are working horses, dogs, or coaching kids. I think this is the most important part. Things always remember the last thing.

There is no doubt that a hound is capable of learning. When I say learning I mean basic learned commands come, load, even sit and lie down if you want to take it that far, but when it comes to instinctive behavior all we can do is guide them. Placing them in solitary to think about what just happened, is applying human type thinking to an animal who’s basic need are reproduction and eating. Just my opinion exposure, exposure, exposure and with some that will never do it!!!

Its as easy as this in my oppinion. After they are 6-8 months old its 1,2,3 strikes your out is the way I look at it, they either have it or they don't. Dogs don't think like we do, when you get them back home they are thinking about when your going to feed them, and (if they have the desire) when they get to go hunting again, I can't see one reason at all putting them away from the pack will do a dang thing but make them bark more. Exposure is the best and only I think you can do for a pup. It all starts with the basic preschool and kindergarden training (putting a handle on them, no barking in the yard ext... and exposure). If you have the right strain of dogs or the right pup all the other B.S is errelivent in my oppinion. Manners, exposure, the right pup and the rest is history.. A hound can only be as good as the hound handler!!!!

Well, Zeluva, I for one, agree completely with Sourdough and RZ. Don't claim to be an expert, but I have been "messing" with pups for 50 years.

I say try it. I don't see it having any negative effect. Dogs have always proved to me they are smarter than I give them credit for. I always try to spend time with my dogs individually, away from the other dogs and I think it helps their cognitive developement in the field and I always hunt dogs alone at some point for confidence. Maybe some solitude after a training session can do some good. Never underestimate a dogs intelligence.
