I just hate to read this kind of story. I am so sorry to hear about your dog. I hope, after all you have done, the dog revoers fully and you can hunt again. It is so unfortunate that our sport has to deal with this situation more and more every year. Is there a fund from the wolf lovers that can help repay the vet bills from this kind of attack?

I am very careful to always obey the law, current permits, tags etc.. BUT, that will all change when I see one of our "magnum" coyotes here in Utah.. We don't have any wolves, but some of our coyotes are sure reaching epic proportions here lately.

Good Luck, and please let us know how it all turns out. KattSkatt

The really crappy part of that whole thing is post those pixs in a newspaper and 70% of the comments will blame you for turning your dog loose in the wolves habitat and its your fault for not keeping your dogs at your control! So you just have to take things in your own hand, im not saying thats right but those pixs i believe give the anti's more ammo against hound hunting!

If I lived there I'd be hunting wolves and thin them out properly. If theres snow on the ground I'd take a varmint caller and go in on those tracks and choose a nice area to call them in. Nice and open and then shoot the shit out of them. Turn my back and walk out and say nothing to anyone and I'd keep on doing it often. Dont you have right to protect your property ?

What do you do if you there when they attack your hounds ? I'd trap them , set devices , lure them , set coyote getters for them , trap guns - it would be all out war !!

I'm pissed off to see that poor hound in that condition. Sorry Tatum that you had to go thru that, hope your hound makes out okay.

The post by Brianshounds was actually my post, my new account was waiting approval and approval just came through. He made the post for me so I could try and get approval to post the attack story on my wolf website.

piglet you are correct, many people will say we are in the wolf's country we deserve to have our dogs attacked.....true

However, those liberal thinking (granola munching...lol) people are a minority. Most people are in the middle of this wolf issue, they are OK with a few wolves around but they expect F&G to manage wildlife properly so people and livestock are safe. The problem is that F&G Depts in every state have people employed within who are biased one way or another, or don't even know as much as you and I do about wolves. Most F&G Depts are stretched on budgets and can not make any statements without studies as proof of any statement made, or they could be considered irresponsible.

IMHO, This is where sports folks have to take the responsibility to let the general public and F&G Depts know when things are out of proportion. I am sure everyone on this forum knows the wolf situation in the west and that F&G Depts are dragging their feet and in most cases actually promoting wolves. In my opinion the F&G as a whole are simply as misinformed and ignorant as the general public. The universities are teaching our wildlife people that wolves are good and wildlife management will self-balance. So this philosophy has been taught to them by the people they trusted as their teachers. Until these professionals prove to themselves that wolves are not actually eating grasshoppers and romping and playing in the mountain forests, they will mismanage.

Now as F&G people are learning the truth about wolves, they are beginning to manage more intelligently. We as hunters must foster this learning process by informing as many people as possible about wolves and how detrimental they are. That is my purpose with the wolf website, to get out the word. I hope some of you will forward any wolf news to me so that I can help get the word out.

THANKS,
Sorry about getting on the soap box with my first post...

Well you may be right but I honestly think your putting to much blame on the fish and game dept.! Wolves are a political tool, wether you want to believe it or not, from my understanding is idaho and wyoming fish and game really want to reduce wolf populations, the problem is Politics! F&G dept. are controlled by politicians so what biologist say they need may get brushed aside because of public opionion on the issue! Anti's have money if they can get deer and elk herds to damn near extiction then deer and elk hunting will get stopped! Houndmen are a bonus, Most people don't understand that you turn a dog loose and could be miles away from it, they think you have it on a leash and its your job like a child to supervise it! I honestly believe 98% of dog owners(all dogs) would say they would not let prize fifi off the leash in wilderness area and if you do your not taking steps to protect your dog! Their ideas of dogs are totally different than ours as houndmen. Most of us are rural people that are governed by metropopulus america, like it or not our way of life is slowly dying because majority rules! And metro america way of life is being forced on all of us!

Good luck with Penny.

Unfortunately these wolf attacks are only going to increase from here on out until the numbers are significantly decreased... I'm thinking zero would be the right number. Here in north Idaho we have seen wolf/hound problems steadily rise during the past decade, and I'm confident that this year will be the worst we've seen... I have had more wolf problems since last fall than I've had during all of the last ten years. It sounds like the worst year Montana will see so far, with all the problems recently.

Those who aren't here in the west and dealing with this problem first hand aren't able to really understand how bad it is. Some people think that hunters shouldn't be in the woods in the first place. Others can't understand how a wolf could be able to kill a dog.. the thinking of someone ill informed about the realities of the strength of a wolf and who has never been around wolves before. The whole wolf situation is ridiculous all the way around. I know it will only get worse before it gets better.

Both of you guys have valid points. Our two new local game wardens were just here to check in Tatum's cat. I can tell you these guys only know what they are told. This is the second time a warden has walked in my shop and told me there are far more lions than wolves in this area and people have learned to value lions so wolves will eventually become accepted. I just smiled and nodded. These guys spend time in the feild, but are not looking down. You can't possibly know how many wolves you have unless you look down. I know that wolf lovers around here are very hard to come by. I really think most city folk can be persuaded that they are super destructive and must be managed. It is critical that they see what wolves are capable of before they see HSUS or some other animal rights propaganda. My mom would not know a wolf if it bit her behind, but I know she hates them. I showed her the TRUTH about wolves and everyone of you are responsible to educate every fence sitter you can. This is so when good people take drastic measures they will not stand alone.

It is only a matter of time until THOSE wolves kill a child or hiker.
Then lets ask those feds if it is just something that has to be accepted!!!!!!

It has happened on two occations so far just weeks ago in Alaska and not so long ago in Saskatchewan, even the coyotes killed the young lady in Nova Scotia a couple months ago.
We are lucky here in Canada...I can kill them all ....legally!!!!!
Carry a rifle in the bush....it's going to happen and sooner or later you will have to defend yourself from a wolf attack!!!!!!!!!

They can tri you with 12 but they will never bury you for doing it!!!

Try and feed some chia seeds. I know this sounds crazy but my wife always looks for natural things for us, the dogs and horses to keep or make us healthy. Chia seeds are not very exspensive and they help generate new tissue. Just something to try that is a little cheaper then meds. you can find them on the net.

The only solution to the wolf problem is total extermination. They aren't manageable and are pleasure killers. We can bitch and complain to fish and game but there is no use. There needs to be a grass roots effort to eliminate this problem. I don't know of any biggame hunter in our area that doesn't want total extermination. There are several ways this could be done. A group could pool together funds to challange the Endangered Species Act itself as an unconstitional unsurping of states rights. We should try to get any candidate running for prosecuting attorney to pledge if elected he wouldn't prosecute any crimes against wolves. We could try to get a ballot iniative passed forcing the state of MT to pay out bounties on wolves.
