Re: linn county area
Meow Meow 1988,
We have been down this road before!
Due to the differences in the country hunted it would not be Apples to Apples. More like Apples to Watermelons!
Even in the State that you are from there are two distincly different styles on each side of the Mountains. The best Hounds from one area would need time to aclimate and adjust to a new area, then still might not be as good as they are at Home.
Also some states have very restictive rules and laws which handicap the Hunters there and keep them from having Hounds that get to express their full potential....this the Hound might due if he lived somewhere else.
Lets be content to know that there are GOOD Hunters and Houndsmen in all the areas that the ole Shorttail lives....and realize that the competition is always between the Hound (or Hounds) and the Bobcat!

Re: linn county area
Well i have bit my toung long enough. I dont belive in the whole diffrent dogs for diffrent areas. A cat dog is a cat dog. I have sold dogs that were decent dogs and make world beaters for people in the snowy country, Libby Montana to be exact its as missriable as it gets there. This guy told me before he bought the dogs not possible to rig cats in this country, i said BS no diffrent ,they just have to work a little harder. When a dog can rig a cat from inside a box doing twenty or thirty they can smell a cat in just about any condition. I told him hunt where you found cats in the past with snow, and that is where you will start finding what you want. Perty soon he was catching cats and know one elts could because the snow had not came yet, granted he had dogs from truck to tree thats all it takes. So the whole thing about west coast dogs not having cold noses is a myth. And another thing you hunt a dog long in the snow and soon you will pull your hair out with trailing tracks that you cant junp that cat may have walked five miles that night. So i Guess what im trying to say is there has to be a point when cold nosed dogs have to do more than just trail and yes there is a lot of dogs that go to the snowy country because they wont rig but they are not cat dogs on the coast . Or they would be standing on a box riging cats. And as far a the best pack of dogs i have hunted with would be owned by Ryan Wad he is a cat hunter and one of the best He hunts mornings only and trees over 40 cat during the season.
Re: linn county area
The heading on this thread is "Linn county area". So I am assuming Meow Meow is asking about the best bobcat dogs in the Linn County area of Oregon. I think it is a fair question, and heck, I'd like to know who has the best bobcat dogs in Linn County
So if you know of some great bobcat dogs in Linn County Oregon, let me and meow meow know about it.
TRW, I often give up on biting my toungue as you did. And I get your point. But your perspective is based on an exchange between two Northern Western states. Please do this for me because there are some mysteries I would like to have solved: Send the four best Western Oregon dogs you can find to these regions: The great lakes area, The South East, The Midwest, and the arid Southwest. If they do well, and catch bobcats on the ground when this is required, I will accept your point. Until then, We know that a dog from Western Oregon did well in Montana. And that is good to know.
I can agree on one thing. A great rig dog in Western Oregon is also a great rig dog in the Great Lakes area. But cats are not caught on top of a rig. And in some of these areas, they are not often caught in a tree. They are caught on the ground.

Re: linn county area
Man, I hate this discussion. It always ends up looking like I am slamming Western Oregon dogs. I love the great bobcat dogs of the Northwest. They are some of the most amazing dogs I have seen from any region. And they do some things that dogs from any other region would have to do to be successful in Western Oregon. If they could not do it, they would not be successful there. Witnessing some of this skillful work in Western Oregon is like some art buff staring at an original Vincent Van Gough.
It is art that can not be seen any other place.

Now that right there is an amazing post. It pretty much says it all in my opinion.
A note to new hunters that might come on here with questions: if you want to possibly stimulate discussion, go ahead and ask away! it is a good thing.
But if you are just seeking answers to a question, definately try the search mechanism, which searches only this board. Many of your questions have been recently asked and discussed at length.
I have noticed that when one of the common questions is asked, some times there is little or no response for awhile. And I think this is why. If you want to ask, certainly ask, but if you get little response, definately do a search, you will most likely get your question answered.
Re: linn county area
Has anyone ever hunted from coast to coast with the same dogs? I would like to hear there thoughts. Northwest to north east like PA or Maine or mass? Colorado is not the east.

Re: linn county area
Ryan,
Very good question!
To the best of my knowledge only a couple of Hunters have brought West Coast Hounds, as a pack, East.
Mr. Bill Curtis and Jerry King both brought very nice West Coast Bobcat and Fox hounds to Oklahoma.
There may have been some others who have brought Hounds East I just do not know of them.
From East to West...Dad has had his Hounds from the Atlantic to West Texas and Kansas and New Mexico.
Success from East to West was about the same. The fellows that brought Hounds from the West to the East sent them back West and started over.
From the NW to the NE...that might be a different deal, Hounds are much similar in tasks, however the Coastal NW hounds given some time to adjust should due well in the SE or Texas.
Would invite someone from the West (yes that means you JC and Tony) to bring a proven Pack this way next fall to run here in Arkansas or Florida. It should be an interesting time!
Tony Steelman has been wanting Dad and I to come out his way for a Hunt. Dads health will preclude this for now (he is undergoing another round of Chemo) but maybe this fall Glen or Mr. Harold and I can put together a pack to try out there.
It will be interesting either way!
Thanks for the Question!

Re: linn county area
I didn't read that one sounded like a lets start a pissin contest thread.
I have often wondered if one of the oregon rig dogs could do it here. I went out there once and whitnessed some amazing dogwork. I guess if i had more money i would know. Even getting one on trial would cost a grand round trip shipping. If one ever makes it here and does do it, you wouldn't be able to breed em fast enough lol.

Re: linn county area
I would love to take you up on that offer. We may have a good time so next cat season where we headed. I live right here on the Oregon coast. I know a man that lives in Bangore Main Nelson Cole He would be a good place start. That is about as far as i can think from my house and it sounds like they have alot of bay ups. He has some great dogs from that country, and i think he would love to go cat hunting.Or if you want come to Oregon and we can run one here.
Re: linn county area
Dads dogboy if you have the place to stay i would love to come check out what you have for hunting it sounds like it might be right up my ally. What kind of season do you have there , and how many cats on the average can a guy catch in a week. How many dogs do you run in a pack, and what is the terrain like. Is my dog going to have to pack his own 4/10 to kill all the snakes.

Re: linn county area
TRW,
Talk to JC about AR....he got a good dose while he was here. We have a place for you and your Hounds to stay.
In AR we only have a few Rattlesnakes and Copperheads with a Cottonmouth or two along the Creeks....come in Dec. and No Worries!
In Florida plenty of room as well, plenty of Cat, plenty of Gators, plenty of Rattlesnakes, Cottonmouths and a few Burmese Pythons that Idiots have turned loose. If that ain't enough there are plenty of Hogs to kill a Hound if they ain't broke off of them. But all that is just to make up for the 2 to 3 Cats per 640 acre section that live there.
As to the terrain, please go back and look at some of the Video clips I posted in the reports I gave in Jan and Feb. Pictures can tell it better than I can!
Dad runs 10 to 12 Hounds in a Pack usually, however we caught several last fall with 5 pups and two old bitches.
The Season is year round in Florida and plenty liberal here in AR. How many Cat YOU can catch in a Week is up to your Hounds! Dad tries to not catch (to us that is one we weigh) more than two per week. We usually tree several or put some in Gopher Holes or Brush Piles durng that same week. I posted somewhere that we finished 2009 with 176 successfully completed Cat races. This was down from 183 in 2008.
The invite is sincere so if you have the time and Hounds to try come on, but waite till fall and the critters will not be so bad, also the Heat and Humidity will be less of a problem in the Fall. This kills far more Hounds each year than the Critters. A four hour race with Hounds that are not used to the Climate = DEAD Hounds.
Good Running to All!

PS Ryan where are you from, it is not listed and if you said I missed it thanks.
