People dont get killed, thats just bullshit!!!
One guy was killed on his way to the outhouse 3 years ago. You'll have to go 50-70 years back to find the next insident!

My 2 cents:
1) Bring up them dogs up so they LOVE you and will sacrifice their life in a hartbeat if an attack direckted at you occur.
2) Brains, brains, brains and brains.........
3) Herding instinct. More of a hog dog than a treeing dog(NOT catch dogs).
4) Speed(drifting dogs).
5) Sticking with. Brownbear dogs need to be bullys.
6) Grit. Not talking about biting in the butt, that all treeing dog people talk about. I mean face to face(look above to the "herding")

Its all about leaving just the "sitting the ass down and defend it" for the bear and contrary to popular belief pulling assfur is the least productive way and it opens up room in your pen real fast.

By the way, reed "between the lines" in the book about Montague Stevens. I do believe there are good reasons to why he did exactly as he did when he hunted them grizzlies

Good luck going for them big brown ones tman308.

Thanks for all the replies. I just wanted to hear what you all think. After reading a book on a particular style of hunting I like to talk to the guys who actually do it. Lynxhunter, what you said makes a ton of sense and is inline with what I was thinking.

Thanks again for the input.

I run em as much as I can. Done it lots. In fact a lot of people do it here. No it is not a death sentence for your dogs, far from it. Yes they will tree I have heard of a few sows that have treed and know of 2 boars near the 7' size that have been shot out of a tree. Rare but can happen. What makes it dangerous is if you get on one and dont have a tag your only option is to pull the dogs off, that can be hairy. Also this past spring the one we killed on the ground got a little grouchy after the first shot but the dogs know how to get away, we weren't noticed by the bear so he didn't come after us which gave us time to get in a 2nd shot to finish it. All the grizzlies I have killed on the ground have been 10yards or less so you really dont want to wound one. A 5' blackbear sow is by far the most dangerous bear for tight dogs, lightning fast and can tear up hounds quick. Pictures are on my website

Uh yes, my plotts are black and white with long ears, Southern Germany bred I believe. Just kidding ,Actually they are a "Grade" dog, walkers in color, 3/4 walker, 1/4 black tan in breed, cant afford the papered stuff.

I second what lynxhunter asked. what do you look for in a hound for it to be good on a grizzly? different from a good black bear dog? I know lynx hunter mentioned they need to have a good herding insticnt, but do you see that in your hounds? is their one breed you prefere in particular that can get it done best, also do you use similar tactics as montauge did?

Top Black Bear dogs will catch Grizzlies, there is no difference. As far as herding analogy is concerned, that is absolutely true in my opinion. Most good bear dogs will run in a bite the bear if there is a chance but the ones that like to hang off the bear usually has a short life. You will see that alot more when running several tight dogs at once ( Mob mentality)
As far as what breed is best, there isn't one. One thing I will say that will probably set off a firestorm is I dont like papered dogs. I believe they are menatlly and physically weaker. I have one in my kennel that will catch ANY bear I put him on but after a week of hunting is physically spent when the others are stilling going strong for another week or more.( He is for sale, not cheap). As far as montauge is concerned I have never heard of him. I will google

Jconroy,
Do you find that grizz tend to line out across country more so then the black bear? Dogs tend to give griz alittle more respect from day one, atleast that is my take on it, do you find the same?
One day I will be able to hunt the long claws legally in my area as we have one of the heaviest population of grizz in BC but also the NCC which is stalling the desion to have a hunt. There is also a lot of hippies willing to call mein as they believe hound hunting is just harassing wildlife.

There is a breed of dog that was originally breed for hunting grizz (japanese yazo bear) Something along those lines. The akita, they used 2 a male and female. Owned a couple of them but of course never hunted grizz. But can tell you they do know how to hunt and have enough grit to take on all commers.

Neet article. I do remember several years ago some guys talking about sending some plotts over there. It's funny of the 2 akitas I had they loved to hunt, and anything that was caught on the ground was dead and quickly.
