Grizzly with hounds?

Post by tman308 »

Anyone have any experience pursueing grizzly with hounds? What are the differences between the way the grizzly acts compared to black bears? Do your dogs get beat up more often? Does the race usually end up on the ground bayed up? Just curious as to how it works with the much bigger grizzly.

Thanks

Have you ever seen a grizzly in a tree? I hear it can be done.

That is a death warrant for your hounds putting them on a grizz. I wouldn't purposly do it with any dog I owned.

Steve Mohr has been running them for a while now, and yes, they made one climb. Get on Plottworld.com if you want to explore this topic more and not hear nonsense about death warrants. Montague Stevens didn't get all his dogs killed every race either. Meet Mr. Grizzly is a book you could read as well by Montague.

Larry,

That is the book I just finished and is why I was asking about it. I have heard that our brothers to the North hunt Grizzly with hounds quite regularly but don't have any first hand knowledge.

Thanks

Steve is about and 8 hr drive from anywhere he can legally run grizz in BC even then he has to have a leh tag to do so. I am sure his experiance is not as deep as some would have you think. Those boys in Europe do it alot as they don't have black bear to chase. I have to say their bears are smaller then the ones around here but probably just as dangerous. I have watched those videos from Sweden and Finland and find their dogs stay back a good ways so two or ten doesn't make a big differnce. You need big timber or ayoung grizz to make them climb as their claws are not designed to climb. In my limited experiance a 500lb grizz is as quick as a 150lb mean sow blackie.
The difference is when they get a hold of your dog they really can end it quick.

I agree with Larry, give Steve Mohr a call. He will talk to you and tell you about what his dogs will and won't do. He will NOT BS you because he doesn't have to, his dogs will speak for themselves. As for how deep his experience is, be your own judge after you talk with him. Let him tell you about his last hunt for grizzlies and what he learned from it and see what you think of his experience.

From what I hear after they are about two years old they usually can't climb? Correct me if any of you BC hounders know different.

Talked to a few guys from Sweden over the phone and they sent me a few pictures, pretty neat. Some get run with walker type fox hounds but they really like plotts and are trying to import as many as they can. They have a big moose hunt over there like we have rifle/shotgun for deer and Grizz ends up killing somebody every year one guy told me. :o

If the branches are low enough on our big fir trees, the mature sows will climb but they sure don't like it. You will never see a decent boar climb. I guess I should never say never.
