Another myth I hate is non hound guys or trappers or even the bad ones say "oh I shot a 50 lb bobcat". Heaviest to date here that I know was 35 lbs and he was a toad. Maybe in other regions but locally I hear it alot.

Here's a couple that I hear. You have to have way more cats in your area than we do. You can't catch the cats around here that easy. I know for a FACT everyone else has more bobcats in there area than I do. Dewey

The biggest myth about cat dogs and cat hunting is that bobcats bale out of tree's at night or day when the hunter is approaching the tree. If a cat dog put the cat up, its there to stay. It's very, very rare for a cat to jump out of a tree, even in the short tree country where I live. The only exception is if you have a tree climber and the climber runs the cat out of the tree.
When I hear someone saying this all I can think of is old Jerry Clower. "There ain't nothing worse than a lying coon dog"!
Well if you care to come and give it a try here in Mn. your sure to forget about Jerry Clower, our cats here bale out a lot. It is also very common for them to stay on the ground and bay up.
larry, to be clear right from the start this is meant with no disrespect. but as a young man i had the pleasure of meeting a older gentleman buy the name of duane smith from vermont, you may even know him. at the time i was just a dumb kid

but he treated me really good for a young one with alot of questions. and i took advantage of many phone calls to vermont from new york, as he had plenty of experience with cats, and dad never monkeyed with them. this is what he told me and i have found it to be true. guys with little knowledge about what their dogs are running never have dogs leave trees. and always look at slick trees. hence coming up with the myth that coon tap trees and bobcats bail. i believe this to be bull. i will also add that a superior houndsmen that has really worked a hound over for running grey fox every once in a while will come in to a tree and when the hound sees the light or hears ya coming hauls ass and comes up with another track. there for leading even some with experience to believe a cat bailed

but in reality old faithful was just looking to save himself an ass whipen. there are other reasons that cats and coon will bale that i won't go into on here. this is just something to think about no harm meant. take care!

Folks this applies to our country..the Southeast....a myth here is that a Slashing, Swinging Hound will hurt your chances of catching a bobcat.
Just the opposite is the case....you have to have that Hound that reaches out to take the SLACK out of the Track to be able to stretch or tree the Ole Short Tail! Now this Hound had better be able to hold the Track or it has hurt you!
Also when 10 to 12 Running Hounds tree a Bobcat he ain't dumb enough to BAIL out! You have to work hard to knock him out.
Good Thread!

Slow and Easy, The cats that I am talking about that bale out do it as they see you coming in to the tree, these cats for some odd reason like to stay on the ground alot as well, sure would like to know why as the outcome is not in there favor.

larry, it has been almost twenty years since i lived in the north east. and only going on what i was told by duane, and another fella named danny luke. then on the occasion the hounds we ran would trash on a cat and tree, guys would walk to the tree and there would be a short tail. but we predominantly promoted coon hounds, so they were trashin when it happened

but being they stayed in the tree, led me to believe what was said was true (seeing is believing). but there is a guy in walton n.y. and i believe spruce mountain on here. that seem to hunt them the same way we use to hunt white rabbits shot gunnin them on the ground. and i always wondered what the reason for this was

. but maybe the few we dealt with back then were just luck!! take care!

Cat dogs will run all cats, bobcat and lion. We teach or should be teaching the dogs what to run. Mine will not run a lion and I have not shock them off them. Dewey

Believe it or not they can catch 60 to 70 in a three month kill season and more than a 10 in a years time. It is impossible to believe isn't it. FOR SOME ANYWAY. Dewey

Here is another myth to our way of thinking!
Breeding the Best to the Best will have as good of a chance of producing a GOOD Hound as a Linebred mating!
Jones 32 writes: “That these dogs can CATCH 70-100 cats in a short season!”
I am not sure what Jones 32 means by a SHORT Season, our average the last 8 years from Dec. 1st till the last day of February is over 80 caught, Treed or Holed, and we did not hunt for the three weeks right around Xmas.

Folks from GA up into VA will sure agree with you, one night this week VAcathunter caught a big Tom Cat after a 45 min Race, ran a Boar Grey an hour and a half, and put a Red Fox in a hole after a 2.5 hour race. Man O Man that was some night!
