The day we quite learnin is the day we're lookin at the wrong side of the grass.....I've always though the best teacher is your own misteaks, you have a good memory and USUALLY do not do it twice, although I have caught myself eatin a bit of "Humble Pie" on occation!!!!
Before I had the chance to hunt leopard with hounds I thought how difficult it had to be to hunt jaguar with them in the jungle, as you mention all the trash that is there for the hounds to run if they are not broke.
That jungle is a different world, theres things livin there I can't pronounce or spell.
I got my first look at what I called broke hounds in Africa, we started a leopard track at daylight made about 6 hrs earlier, it had been walked on by every critter you could imagine from monkeys to elephant and the hounds still were able to catch the big tom after a long hot 4 hour chase.
These were hounds from Nico Lourens pack and they were so well broke off trash they would not even lift their nose from the ground if impala or other game ran in front of them...
I'll dig into my old photo's of with some of the big cats taken when I was in the jungle on that hunt and get them scanned and post a few...very interesting experience....

Where we hunt here in Canada and most of that is done with snow conditions there is little to break your hounds off and it's easly done with a bit of time spent working with them.

Here is a couple of pictures that Memo wanted me to post. I do not know any of the details of the pictures. When I was in Mexico I was able to visit with Memo quite a bit. There was a little bit of a language barrier, but when we started talking perros (dogs) everything seem to make sense. This man does know dogs and is a very nice person.

I was thinking last night about the places I have been and the people that I have met due to these damn hounds. When I was rodeoin, I would be driving down the road and wonder to myself I wonder what it was like up in those hills. Now due to these hounds I have seen a number of those places. I have met some of the greatest people also, there is a magazine that is called RANGE magazine and years ago the was a write-up in it about Richard H. and his wife Karen. Well I read the article and there was a number for him well I called him and we talked dogs for awhile and then low and be hold I get off the plane in Mexico and there stands Richard. I asked him if he rembered talking to me on the phone. He said yes, I think just to be kind. But boy did he and Tony Rivera have some great stories about hunting jauguars with Dale Lee. When we were sitting under that palapa in Mexico and these two start telling there stories and then Memo has I belive made a hunt or two with Louie Chappa. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Well enough rambiling.

I have alot of pics from Steven Ball that he had sent me when Wayne went over there and caught those cats. Cool pics, I remember 1 where they was packing out the lion on a game pole. But really nice pics and a heck of a story

The first time Wayne went to Mexico he wanted to run a lion but didn't know if his hounds were capable. He was catching 100 bobcats a year but hadn't caught a lion. I welcomed him to come but also told him his hounds must be broke because it isn't an easy feat to accomplish. At first we'd scrape the roads and look for tracks. Since I didn't know Wayne or his hounds I didn't let him start any of the first races. Id turn mine loose to get the track going and then let him turn into the race. After a few days I got to know Wayne a little more and I could tell he knew what he was talking about when it comes to hounds. He had brought four hounds over four years old and I noticed neither were wearing a shock collar which I though was pretty impressive. I finally told him "lets do some free casting" as I was interested in watching his hounds work. The first morning we free casted we caught two bobcats. We took a break that afternoon and that evening we caught a lion. The following morning we free casted and again we caught another lion. Wayne was so tickled and said that after 40 years of hound hunting he never thought his hounds were capable of catching a lion. I just laughed and said "if you ask me there must not be any lions in your part of texas". He enjoyed watching one race where his hounds were the first ones to open on track. Since that year Wayne has been comming down and our hounds have run many races together. Weve run lion, bobcats, ocelote and jaguarundis together. Of course to me a cat is a cat. Wayne and I have a good friendship and when he comes down to Mexico we always have a great time.
As you can see we don't have much for trees where I hunt. Mostly mesquite, cactus and other smaller trees.

If you fellas are getting cats treed up in those conditions I'd say you have some good hounds and got things figured out pretty well!
Thanks for sharing, reminds me a bit of leopard hunting in Africa, dragging roads and crappy trees to get cats in!
Memo ...be sure to keep those photo's comming, not many fellas get a chance to see those cats.
