I'm not sure who "longshot" is, but I do know Mr Mason. In fact, I was just at his place with a few pot lickers (Ridgebacks and Kemmers) last weekend.

Mr Mason is an awesome houndsman, but he is a Catahoula man mostly... I'd be really surprised if he had any Ridgebacks.

I am trying to breed great danes to run bears. I have crossed them with a blue gascon. So far the dog i kept out of this cross is showing really good sign he is ten months now and runs with my pack will kill coons. He has been at every lion tree this year. I think that those hound traits are not to far gone and can be bred back with crossing into other breeds.

Interesting topic. My family and I have raised RR's since the late '70's and consider them exceptional dogs. My hunting experience is finite(limited) as we owned them mostly as pets. I do have opinions as to their application as hunting hounds. They are the most athletic dogs all around I've ever seen. I remember distinctly my first one being able to easily clear a 5ft fence standing flat footed or on the run. I also remember him catching an adult coon off a chain link fence and went to shaking it like a rag doll. When the coon's buddy came back over the fence and jumped on my dogs back, he dropped the one he had, reached around and grabbed the one that was attached to him like nothing and in short order, killed them both. I was 15 and since then have caught and had many wars with my hounds and coons and have never seen the like. I've witness several deer the dogs caught on the run including a 4 pt. buck on my 18th birthday. I don't think they have an application as a cat dog in any way, but I do think they would make a mean bear think twice about not wanting to climb. I had one that I put on a couple bears and having no experience, that dog came alive and worked those bears like a heeler on a rank bull. Needless to say, within a minute each time, those bears went up and didn't want down. I think one could train them to do about anything, except bark on track.
