Strength Training

Post by sheimer »

I was wondering how much you get your pups out to just learn how to run. I was looking at a post the other day ("Harley's first tree" I think) and that dog in the pics looks so much more mature at four months than my pup looks at 3.5 months. I got to wondering if it was just from running or if it was just a difference in the breed. My little B&T pup has a hard time keeping all four feet headed the same direction. I let him roam free around the ranch, but I wonder if some specific practice on running would be in order? I know with horses it can be hard on their joints if they are introduced to too much stress too early in life. Is it the same in dogs?

Thanks,
Scott

I think that every dog is unique and this way is one example. I've noticed over the years that some of my dogs really like to exercise and some don't give a rats tail for it. Then when i go to chase a track they turn into a completely different dog. Maybe they think that this is a waste of time, but on the other hand i am quite sure they don't mind being out and about because it beats being on "lock down" in the pen.

Some dogs mature slower than others also. At 3.5 months a lot of them are still figuring things out. I usually have my pups out with the big dogs to exercise, but put them back in the truck say after around 300 yards (give or take). Then as they get older let them run more and more until they are totally running with the big dogs. I think it is better for them to do a little at a time.............not too hard on their growing joints plus not to sour them with too much too soon. Maybe after they exercise, give them a treat and let them know that is a good thing. Bribery never hurts!!
