I posted a while back about trying my kemmer/catahoula hog dog crosses on bobs. There were a lot of responces and some great info given. Some thought I should give my cross a try. Some thought Id be better off goin with a breed that already has the tools for the game.
Ive decided that I will probabally get a hound/cur breed with the tools. My question is what breed would make the most sence in areas where the properties are smaller where cold trailing isnt an option on all dry ground 100% of the time.
Now I know everyone has a preference to what breed/line they probabally currently run but Im curious as to what your opinions would be as to my particular region and conditions.
Id also like to thank some people whom Ive hunted with in here. I went on a bob hunt about a month ago with 3 guys and treed a few bears last weekend with 2 others. Forgive me if I dont name you but I know how people like to crap on people when you mention names and how you either like their dogs or their methods. For what its worth thanks for the experience and info.

Hey Friend,
Your in kind of a dilemma. you have to hunt the cats in dry conditions for the most part, so that would mean that you would need a hound of some sort or a dog with a cold nose? But if I'm not mistaken, you probably hunt on allot of ranches and don't have enough room to let a hound cold trail up a bobcat for 3-5 hours and cover lots of country.
I know some guys that use curs to tree cats but they typically just strike hot tracks or they put the curs on the cats when they see them cross the road or something.
I hunt both fox and bobcat, usually tree quite a few more fox than cat but I use strictly hounds (Walkers) and I don't let mine work tracks for hours on end. I don't have too, as I can pick them up and go a mile down the road and find a better track to run.
A hound cur cross would probably work fine for what you want to do.
I know some guys that try to find a "semi-silent" hot nosed hound that locates and trees good to run cats on ranches. Finding a line of dogs with cur in them that will locate and tree bobcats consistently will be the challenge.....but they are out there.
Good luck.....I'm just south of you below Fresno.

Some of the more talented varmit and cat dogs I've seen were Walker/Leopard Cur or Trigg/Leopard Cur...
That is one of the few cross breedings I have seen that seems to have any consistancy.

One of the best bobcat/fox dogs I have ever hunted with was a cur/trigg cross. A little male that was ironically named "Trig". He was almost silent on track and was a good locator and a good tree dog....................................................for about 20 minutes. After that, he would stop treeing and just pop back in the road. It helped if you turned a good tree dog to him to hold the tree. He would suck up cat and fox.
He was amazing.

Yea, Property size is my main concern. Id love to hove some cold nosed hounds that would run cold tracks but is just not a possibility in my area. The properties in my area are usually a few thousand acres. Some of the places I have are just too small to even try. The sad thing is I know some people who could get me hooked up with some quality dogs. I just dont think they will work in my area.

I'd just try and get you a couple pups out of really outstanding squirrel dogs and start goin for walks with em. Snappy little f@^kers that wind very well. You live a long wasy from the kinda dogs I'm talkin about though. I know quite a few fellas that tree 20 or 30 cats a year with them sorta dogs and they aint even tryin. And they do it day and night.

Anybody else? One of my friends who regularly posts in here gave me a call about this and gave me some pretty sound advice that I think I will follow. Just curious about any other perspectives?
