Colorado , public access on state properties

Post by jasonmark »

What are your thoughts on a petition to open more ATV/4x4 access to public ground specifically statetrust and DOW properties, for lion hunting, deer and elk hunters would benefit, surly they would sign on, is there a better route to take or will it never happen

Does ATV access disturb the wintering grounds for deer and elk more then the lions themselves.

Thanks guys

I would think the deer and elk hunters would jump with joy if they did this. And an atv wouldn't hurt anything.

Jasonmark, some state trust lands and state wildlife areas are open to ATV use while others are closed (for various reasons). Not all STL lands are leased for public access and are treated like private property.

Rather than trying to change statewide regulations on all properties, I would look at specific properties. DOW publishes brochures with property specific regulations for each property (STL and SWA). If it closed to ATV use, you might start by checking with the local DWM as to why it may be closed.

I think someone or a group would be more likely to be successful in changing access to specific properties, with a valid reason.

Either way, I always encourage people to let their voices be heard. Regulations are set by the wildlife commission through a public process, and if no one shows to rebut or argue for an issue, then we all loose.

I've seen it happen, where a special interest group was able to effect change in their favor, because nobody showed up to argue against it. Even though the local DOW staff did not agree with the change.

If you approach an issue well informed, and make a good logical, articulate, arguement, then it may happen. But you need to know the reason a specific property was closed to ATV's before trying.

Look at what the Colorado Trappers Association was finally able to pull off with furbearers... Now there is a season for a list of species previously closed.

Just my two cents!
