Hunter's Horn by Harriette Simpson Arnow has to be one of the best books I have read.

In the hills of Kentucky, about the time the great depression was winding down and WWII was winding up, Nunn Ballew vows he will catch King Devil, the fox that is a local legend, if it is the last thing he does. His hound Zing runs himself to death trying. Nunn has a chance to shoot King Devil in front of the hounds, but he just can't bring himself to do it.
So Nunn sells off most of his livestock and his family goes another winter with no meat so Nunn can buy a pair of registered foxhounds, the first in the county. Nunn spends night after night, all night long running those hounds while the farm gets neglected.
I guess this book hit me in a place that is all too familiar. I'm sure some of you know what I'm talkin about?
