Keith,
I'm picking up two males from John on Friday out of Josie's recent litter. Plan to introduce them to our North Country cats later down the line.

Truely the end of an era...old,old, Vaughn...

Almost got a couple of Minisink pups, but Bow is hunting them instead.
12-Gauge has some nice cross pups.
I wonder if anyone is hunting pure Minisink west of the mississippi?

Do you want to hear a bias opinion on the Minisink hounds? I thought so, thanks. My friend and I ordered a couple of them about 20 years ago. Yep that long he was running big ads in Full Cry and American Cooner. Big beautiful blue dogs. We both had owned Vaughn dogs before and we could hardly wait. Those were the two dumbest dogs I have ever seen in my life. Meat Ball and Rambo, we gave them a good chance and even got old Meat Ball to rigging some off the hood but he always had to take a big dump up there first and then kick it back with both feet on the wind shield. LOL! It wasn't all that funny if you were setting in that old two tone ford F-150. WHEW!!!

Anyway I guess you would say they never made the grade. But that was just two dogs and that can't be considered when you think about a strain as a whole. They ended up in the bone yard right next to two Del Cameron dogs but there again just a select few didn't make it and those breeders have done well and are still selling pups.

As you can tell folks my luck has just never been all that good.

Yes Mike I guess a guy can get a cull from about anybody can't they. I sold a five year old redbone (I say sold when really it was a trade for about half what that hound was worth) to a guy a couple years back after he called me twice looking for a lead dog (one of only two dogs I've ever turned loose). He claimed his best couple dogs had been killed and the others just weren't finishing tracks that he thought they should finish. What he wanted was a single dog to lead his pack to the tree, which is a mighty big request in my books. So after the second call I loaded my Sam dog out of Ike and went for a visit.

The potential owner was a friendly sort, and went about his chores after my arrival. You know Jeff Allen he says? Nope but I've heard the name before. He went on about his chores and then later ask me if I knew Wade Lemon, to which I answered that yes, I had met him before. And the man continued to do his chores and moved on into different conversation......

A bit later he told me well, I bought a dog from one of those guys and it wouldn't trail shit and it's buried out back. A few minutes later he told me that he'd bought a hound off the other guy as well and it wouldn't chase anything but deer, and that it was buried right next to the other dog.......

Now I guess that he told me those stories to let me know that if I'd brought him a bum hound that he was going to take pleasure in placing it in the ground right next to the dogs Jeff and Wade sold him, so I replied that Sam was all I had said he was and if he didn't like him just call me and I'd come pick him up........

After the first hunt he telephoned me and claimed Sam had rigged a three year old tom from the box and ran it to the tree for a client, and that he was gonna breed him to a red bitch he had gotten from some bear hunters in northern California. Two years have passed and I telephoned him the other day, and he offered me a pup out of Sam and that bitch......I also ask him how Sam was doing for him and he claiemd he was still digging and scratching on the tough stuff.

Bottom line is stand behind your word and your dog and never shit down anybodies neck!

Bottom line is you can not mass produce Top hounds regardless of where they come from. Also each person has their own idea of what a top hound is along with how you train them.
Your best luck comes from keeping whole litters and hunting the heck out of them. Its much easier to see which ones or all to cull this way.
I have had good luck with the breeds mention however my thoughts are you make your own luck through hard work.

WOW that brought tears to my eyes. I have hunted with several blue dogs, but old John was the best I ever had the chance to hunt with. He was just a pleasure to be with. I just dont say that about tooo many blue dogs. He was one of those once in a life time hounds.

Buddy I went through it last year. It really sucks and hurts hopefully one of his pups will pick up where he left off. :D

Pups from Rosie, Joe's sis ?
If so , then she was my pic of the litter for a bobcat bred pup.
Then these John pups ought to be extra nice.
