I have been reading the post "Bill Green's breeding advisor" and it got me thinking.....
There is a lot of history and questions surrounding the history of the Blue dogs. I know little if nothing about the history and origins of the B&T's. Are there any historians reguarding the beginnings of this breed out there? I am just curious.

Re: History of the B&T's
I found this on Wikipedia hope its some help
The Black and Tan Coonhound is a breed of dog used principally for trailing and treeing raccoon. It's a cross between the Bloodhound, and the Black And Tan Virginia Foxhound. The Black and Tan Coonhound is descended from the Talbot hound, found in medieval England after the eleventh century. Its ancestry is then traced through the Bloodhound and the Foxhound to the Virginia Foxhound, commonly called the "black and tan".
And this is from the AKC web site.
The Black and Tan Coonhound is believed to have descended from the Talbot Hound, which was known in England as far back as the 11th century, and the Bloodhound. In America, the Black and Tan Coonhound evolved from the Foxhounds that possessed treeing instinct and the black and tan color pattern. Owned by scouts and Indian fighters during the late 1700s, the Black and Tan was the first coonhound to be considered a separate breed from the American Foxhound.

I can't go and write a book on here but there is alot of information that I got from the person who has been working on rewriting Boatman's book about Black and Tans. There are a few gaps in the information and some is supposition as yet. Most are accepted to be descended from hounds that were bred in Va. and migrated to the Ohio river valley. After the Civil War there is alot more recorded information, including an early breeder in Canandaigua, NY who brought some stock from Tennessee on the way home from the war. I believe his name was Merritt.
